Our school uses the independent reading program called "Acclerated Reader".
Many of you are familiar with this program from past years. Here is a little
information about how I use the program in my teaching practices.
Reading Levels:
Students are tested on the STAR test each marking period to determine which
reading levels they can successfully read independently. We then record the
levels on a chart in their AR folder. As a child earns 3 - 100% scores on
tests (while maintaining an overall average of 85%) they will move up 1
reading level. I also adjust reading levels (if needed) each marking period
after students STAR test. I typically do not allow students to read above
the 5th grade level. There are many books in our library that 3rd graders
enjoy reading and trust me... I have many ways to challenge the dedicated
reader! :)
AR Goals:
Each student has a goal of at least 5 AR points per marking period. This
would equal about 10 story books or 2 chapter books. After the first marking
period, we discuss a comfortable goal and each child determiones how many
points they would like to earn.
Children will also enjoy working toward earning the school's rewards. I have
listed the requirements for earning each level below.
Introductory Reader: 3 - 1/2 point books and 10 total points = a can of pop
Independent Reader: 3 more 1/2 point books and 12 total points = snack pack
Super Reader: 3 more books (worth 1 point or more) and 15 total points =
king size candy bar
Advanced Reader: 3 more books (worth 2 points or more) and 20 total points =
choice of a water bottle, computer time, or a lanyard
Bronze Star Reader: 3 more books (worth 3 points or more) and 35 total
points = bronze award tag
