Math

Week of May 5th:

This week our focus was multiplying decimals. The students are figuring out
where to place the decimal point after they have mulitplied. We have used
estimation and fraction muliplication to help us with this concept. We are
starting to have some issues with homework not getting done. Please check
your child's planner for nightly homework.

Week of April 28th:

Decimals, Decimals, Decimals. This week we concentrated on adding and
subtracting decimals. We are working very hard on understanding place value
of decimals, a hard concept to grasp. The students have received their
Covering and Surrounding CAAP test back. We had wonderful scores on this, ask
your student about thier grade.

Week of April 14:

Well into the "Covering and Surrounding" unit, the students are learning to
find the area of a circle. Ask your child to tell you the formula for this.
The CAAP test for this unit is this week.

We are beginning Bits and Pieces III today (Friday, April 18th). In this unit
students will be learning about decimals. They will be performing the four
basic operations (adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing)using
decimal numbers. Most of this unit is focused around money, so you can have
your child practice using word problems revovled around money.

Week of March 10th

The students are working on the "Covering and Surrounding" unit. They are
doing many hands-on activities to explore area and perimeter.

Week of March 3rd

The students took the District CAAP test to finish the Fractions unit this
week. Overall scores indicate a need to stay more focused during instruction
and participate more. The next unit is called "Covering and Surrounding,"
and will focus on finding area and perimeter.

Week of February 11th

We'll be finishing multiplication of fractions this week. Next week, we'll
begin dividing fractions. The CAAP test for this unit is coming soon.

Week of January 21st

We have just finished adding and subtracting of fractions. We will be
starting multiplication of fractions this week.

Week of December 17th

Shapes and Designs is finished! We took our CAAP test last week and are
moving forward. We have started our fraction unit, Bits and Pieces II. This
week we reviewed equivilent fractions and reducing fractions to lowest terms.
After vacation we will begin adding and subtracting fractions.

Week of December 4th

Our Shapes and Designs unit is moving right along. We have been studying the
properties of regular polygons and angle benchmarks. Students should be
bringing home their math binders to complete their homework. We will be
completing this unit within the next week. There will be a CAAP test for this
unit. Our next unit is Bits and Pieces II, working with fractions.

Week of November 6th

We began a new math unit this week. Shapes and Designs will be our focus
for the next few weeks. This new unit is a geometry unit. Students will be
learning about the properties (side lengths, angle measures, angle sums...)of
different shapes.
The student's number posters are fabulous. This has been my best group
of posters ever. Great Work!!!

Week of October 22nd

We are finishing up our Prime Time Unit. This week our focus was on
Prime Factorization. Ask your child about factor trees! We will be finished
with our first unit next week and the students will be taking a CAAP test.
Our next unit will focus on geometry. Special number projects are due next
Friday, we are looking forward to seeing these creative posters. Remember I
will NOT accept late posters. They either get turned in by Friday, November
2nd or not at all.

Week of October 8th

MEAP testing. Next week we will be able to get back to our Prime Time Unit.

Week of October 1st

We worked really hard this week getting through two investigations in our
math unit. Our focus this week was common multiples and common factors. We
will soon be getting into prime factorization of numbers. Most students
usually like prime factorization because it is an organized way of completing
thier work. This will be our last investigation in Prime Time and then we
will move into geometry. One way you could help your child at home would be
to quiz them on mulitplication facts to 12. Knowing the multiplication facts
will help them throughout all our units this year.

Week of September 24th

Our Prime Time unit is well under way. Students have been using factors and
multiples of numbers to solve many different problems, as well as play a
couple of different math games. We had our first math quiz. Check your
child's binder for their score. Students were also introduced to Venn
Diagrams. For most using Venn diagrams was a review. These give the students
a chance to classify numbers as well as find similarities between numbers. We
will soon be learning about Greatest Common Factor and Least Common Multiple.
Finally, students should be working on getting to know their multiplication
facts.

Our first unit is "Prime Time". During this unit we will be working on
factors and multiples. The students will learn how to understand
relationships among factors, multiples, divisors, and products. They will
recognize and use prime and compostie numbers, square numbers and odd and
even numbers. The students will also develop a variety of strategies for
solving problems.

Math Binders will be given to students as soon as they arrive. We will set up
and organize these binders in class. I ask that the students keep their work
in these binders. Please check the binders to see how the students are doing
and what we are working on in class.

Week of September 4th
We reviewed some math vocabulary (factors, products, multiples) and
played a game called The Factor Game. Students received their books and math
binders this week. Hopefully they have shared this with you.
