Math

Have a wonderful summer!

May 19, 2008

We have finished unit 6 on decimals. Today we are starting unit 7. This unit
focuses on equivalence in multiplication and division and reviewing
strategies for multiplication and division that students have learned this
year. If your child still does not have their multiplication facts down
please work with them on this. This will greatly impact their ability when
they go to junior high. It is just memorizing facts and the time needs to be
made with them so they can succeed in junior high. I will not work with them
on memorizing facts. This is something that should have already been
mastered in previous years and honestly I do not have time in my curriculum
needs. Please take the time to help your child.

May 2, 2008

We will continue to work on estimating sums of decimal numbers and adding
decimals to the thousandths through reasoning about place value, equivalents
and representation. we will also work on rounding decimal numbers up or
down. Look for Homework reflecting this concept. Your child may need a
little help from you. I've noticed this is a tough topic for them to
comprehend.

April 25, 2008

We are continuing our work in fraction and decimal equivalents. The students
are getting more comfortable with decimals on a daily basis. They can now
tell you a percent of a decimal just by looking at it. We will move into
estimating sums of decimal numbers. We will also work on adding decimals to
the thousandths through reasoning about place value, equivalents and
representation.

******************************************************************************
April 18, 2008

We will continue to work on ordering decimals and justifying their order
through reasoning about decimal representations, equivalents and
relationships. We will be moving into Investigation two. This unit focuses
on estimating sums of decimal numbers and using representations to add
tenths, hundredths, and thousandths. They will also learn how to add
decimals to the thousandths through reasoning about place value, equivalents,
and representations.

******************************************************************************
April 7th

We are moving into our new unit six. This unit is called "Decimals on Grids
and Number Lines". This unit will focus on decimals, fractions and
percents. We have already had a unit that touched on these key concepts.
This unit is a step higher and builds upon what the students have already
learned. This week we are working in investigation one. We will be ordering
decimals and justifying their order through reasoning about decimal
representations, equivalents, and relationships. We will be comparing
decimals to the landmarks 0, 1/2, and 1.

******************************************************************************
March 24th

We are still working in our perimeter and Area unit. The students had a quiz
last week in regards to perimeter and area. Most students did very well.
Look for the quiz this week in sent homework. We will wrap this unit up this
week and move into “Mathematical Emphasis” unit. This unit focuses on
recognizing and building small figures, examining the relationships among
angles, line lengths, and areas of similar polygons.
******************************************************************************
March 12th

We have currently moved into unit 2 in our geometry and measurement unit.
This unit focus is on comparing the perimeters and areas of rectangles when
the dimensions are multiplied by given amounts. We will be using numerical
and/or geometric patterns to describe how the perimeters and areas of
rectangles change when the dimensions change. We will also be learning to
explain how perimeters and areas of rectangles change.

******************************************************************************
February 27th

This week in math we are focusing on describing and classifying two-
dimensional figures. We are learning how to describe triangles by the size of
their angles and lengths of their sides. We are characterizing and comparing
quadrilaterals including parallelograms, rectangles, and squares. We will
also be using known angles to find the measurement of other angles.

******************************************************************************
February 15th

This week we are continuing to work on adding and subtracting fractions. This
has been a struggle for most students so please check their homework this
week to ensure proper fraction process. We will be adding and subtracting
fractions through reasoning and finding equivalent relationships. We will
also be working on finding relationships among percents.

*****************************************************************************
January 27th

This week we will focus on identifying fraction and percent equivalents
through reasoning about representations and known equivalents and
relationships. We will also be using equivalent fractions and percents to
solve problems. Next week we will focus on ordering fractions and
justifying their order through reasoning about fraction equivalents and
relationships. We will be comparing fractions and percents to the landmarks
0, 1/2, and 1.

*****************************************************************************
January 13th:

In math this week we are focusing on understanding the meaning of fractions
and percents. We will be interpreting everyday uses of fractions, decimals
and percents. We will be finding fractional parts of a whole or a group
along with finding percentages of a group. On Wednesday all students will
be required to bring in a food item to cut apart and share with their
group. Before they can eat...math has to be done...they will focus on
cutting the "food item" into certain fractions and percents. It will be a
fun activity!

*****************************************************************************
January 3rd:

This week we are finishing up unit 3 which focused on adding and subtracting
large numbers. We will have a final assessment on Tuesday January 8th on
subtracting large numbers. Next week we will dive into unit 4, which is
called "What's That Portion". Here is a breakdown for each unit:

Investigation 1:
Using percents and fractions
Investigation 2:
Comparing and ordering fractions
Investigation 3:
Adding and subtracting fractions
