In science we are working hard in our ecosystems unit. We have created
biomes and this week we will work on polluting our biomes. We have been
studying different ecosystems and different pollutions that affect these
ecosystems. We are discovering when pollution occurs it also interrupts the
food chain. This was a realization the students had never thought about.
Ask your child about our experiments on pollution.

It has been a very busy week in science! We have guppies, snails, plants and
algae in our aquariums. Very exciting! We have been working very hard on
making good observations from our labs. We are trying to gather as much
information as possible so we can draw concrete evidence from these
observations. We continue to have fun and learn in science!

In science we have been having a lot of fun! The students all have their own
pet mealworm that they are in charge of taking care of. We are watching
these worms carefully so we can see the different changes this little worm is
going to go through. We have had a good success rate on worms staying
alive. We had one die due to unknown reasons and another die because I was
not watching where I put my hand. L Lucky for me the student was very
understanding!
We created our terrariums yesterday and are anxiously waiting for some of our
seeds to sprout. We will create our aquarium on Monday. On Tuesday we will
receive our first part of our live materials for our aquariums. We will
receive algae and plants on this day. Thursday we will receive grasshoppers
and isopods for our terrariums. In the following week we will get our snails
and guppies. The students are very excited and love doing this hands on
stuff. We are learning about ecosystems and food chains right now.

Science has been very exciting this week. The students have received their
very own pets. They are mealworms. I was amazed that the entire class was
excited and not even grossed out a little bit. They were all very mature
about this adventure. The students all decided they wanted to even keep them
in their desks. Very Cool! We have moved into a new unit in science. It is
our ecosystems unit. I have to be honest that this is my very favorite unit
and I am excited to get started with it.
Next week we will start to set up our bio-domes. They will create an
terrarium and aquarium next week. They will eventually add animals to the
aquarium and terrarium. We will be learning about ecosystems and what it
pertains.

April 7th
We will continue in our sound unit this week. We will have a CAAP test on
this unit early next week. Students will recieve a study guide later on in
the week for the small test.

March 24th
We just wrapped up our light unit and took a CAAP test Friday for this unit.
We are now moving into our sound unit. This week we will be learning about
sound, which vibrations produce, is a form of energy that travels though
matter as a wave; sounds can be characterized by wave’s wavelength,
frequency, and amplitude. This is a fun week in Science!

March 7th
We have just moved into our light and sound unit. Students are working hard
in daily labs and activites. Our dissection went wonderful! Thank you to
all the parents who took time out of thier day to help. i really appreciate
it!

February 15, 2008
This week we will continue to work on learning about the body systems and
focusing most of our attention on the respiratory system. Lung dissection is
Friday February 22nd. We will then move into the unit of “light”.

January 27th
We currently took or Floating and Sinking CAAP test last week. We are
switching gears and focusing on the body systems. We will work in this unit
preparing us for our lung dissection which will be Feb. 20th. Students will
be working on a project that incorporates each body system through art.
They will also write a paper about all the different body systems. They
will start their research this Friday in computer lab. More information
will be sent home soon. I will need volunteers for the dissection so look
for the note home in the next week or so.

January 13th
This week we are finishing up our floating and sinking unit. We will also
work on a few health lessons this week. On Thursday Mrs. Westerman and Mrs.
trapp's 5th grade TAG classes will be coming into our science class to help
with a fun lab called "Deep sea Diver Relays". This lab focuses on density
and the cartesian diver. This will be a blast! We are very excited to have
the Tag classes help us with this lab! The sinking and floating CAAP will
be next week Tuesday.

January 3rd
We are currently working in the sinking and floating unit. We will work in
this unit until the end of the marking period which is at the end of this
month. This week we are working on measuring buoyant force through various
labs. Next week we will focus on displacement and Archimedes principal.
Ask your student about the fun labs they are doing in class.
