The year is fast approaching its end. We have a lot of things we are trying

gear. We will attend this park rain or shine.

We will be having our end of the year trip to Grand Rapids on June 5th. This
will be a long day from 7am to 7pm. We will travel by school bus and have
parent chaperones come with us. Notices for chaperones went home today so
look for them in your student’s homework folder.

Graduation will follow our big trip on June 6th. It will be at 1:45pm in
Lars, refreshments and cake will follow the ceremonies.

Enjoy the spring weather. Please contact me if you have any questions,

April 18th

Dear Families,

I hope you are enjoying the wonderful warm weather we have been blessed with
this week. Please encourage your child to play outside when it is nice out
and turn the video games and TV’s off. A lot has been going on this week and
I have lots of updates to give you. First of all the students confronted me
on a personal issue yesterday and I had to be honest with them. So if you
have not heard I am expecting my first child with my husband late October.
This is very exciting news and the students were very excited to find out
that the “rumor” was true.

Field trips are vastly approaching. I appreciate all the parents who
volunteered to be driver/chaperones for our Inland Seas field trip May 16th.
I will be sending home more information to the parents who were randomly
selected to come with us next week. We have another field trip coming up on
May 20th to the Art Park at Crystal Mountain. This trip will be most of the
day and once again I will need parent drivers/chaperones for this trip also.
I hope you do not mind that we are not taking a school bus. The reason we
have chosen for parent drivers is to help keep the cost down and save more of
the money we have raised for the Grand Rapids trip. Information in regards
to the Art Park will be sent home next week also.

In regards to our fundraiser between the two fifth grade classes we have
raised all but $200.00 for our trips. I am so proud of our students! This
is a huge accomplishment and we made it almost to our goal. YEAH!

Each Friday for the next 3 Fridays we will be having personal German lessons
in our classroom. Five students come from West Senior High to teach the kids
German. This has been very exciting for all students! The students now know
how to count to 12 in German and about 8 colors.

On Friday May 16th we will also have a basket raffle and walk a thon with
Glen Loomis parents and students. Our class has to create a basket to be
raffled off at this event. If you have an extra basket that you are not
using please let me know. The theme for our basket is “scrap booking”. Our
class will be responsible to fill this basket with anything and everything
that pertains to scrap booking. This could be pretty paper, ribbon spools or
ever left over ribbon, stickers, hole punchers, markers, photo albums or
anything else you can think of to put in our basket. I will send more
information on paper next week in regards to our basket. This will be a fun
event for our class.

Enjoy the spring weather! ~Mrs. Kyser

April 11th

Just quick messages in regards to our pop can fundraiser that ended today.
My class did a wonderful job! We raised a total of $1,377.45. I am so
impressed! Our top raiser for week 1 was Grace Stanton, Week 2 - Grace
Stanton and our 3rd week was Allie Baker. Way to go girls! Each week these
top winners received a $5.00 gift card to borders for their hard work! Our
overall top fundraiser was Grace Stanton with a total amount of $240.64
raised for our Field Trips. Yeah to Grace! Grace will also enjoy a lunch
with me with her choice of food. Mr. Sattlers class raised a total of
$1,061.19. Yeah to his class also! As a total we have raised for our fifth
grade field trips $2,435.60. This is an awesome achievement and I am so
proud of all our fifth graders! We are little short but not to worry
students still have time to donate if they did not have a chance to these
last few weeks. Enjoy your weekend! I am so proud of all fifth graders!

April 7th

Welcome back everyone! I hope you enjoyed your spring break! A few
announcements for this week after our long break: Next Monday April 14th I
will be taking all students attending EJH next year to the school for a tour
in the AM. I will have a substitute teacher for the students that will be
staying behind because they will be attending WJH. The WJH students will
have their visitation in May. Permission slips for EJH went home today
please send them back ASAP. Our spelling words that were sent home before
spring break; will be tested on this coming Friday.

Update: In reagrds to our fundraiser both 5th grade classes have raised
enough money for us all to attend the Inland Seas adventure in May. Congrats
to all students who have participated! Our last collection day is this
coming Friday. Please make sure we all make an effort to help raise money
for our trip. As of now we still need to raise quite a bit more in order for
us to attend our Grand Rapids trip. Thanks again for all the students who
have really gone above and beyond!

I hope everyone has a wonderful week!

March 24th

Dear Parents,

I hope you enjoyed your long Easter weekend. Just a reminder that we have a
short week; there will be a half day on Friday. We are continuing to move
forward in all academic areas. Conferences are tonight on an as needed
basis. I sent a note home to you last week indicating if a conference was
requested. If you feel you did not get your letter and would like a
conference please call me ASAP. The students have been doing a remarkable
job completing their HW packets these last few weeks. I put together an
incentive to help motivate students to complete all class and homework. This
incentive takes place on Fridays and is 20 minutes of free time to play a
game or draw with their friends. The students must have good behavior to
participate in this event also. This incentive is working out wonderfully.
Students are getting all class and homework completed and behavior is
excellent.

Pop can fundraising is going awesome! Our class alone raised $544.00 dollars
last week! We are on our way to raising enough money for both field trips.
Grace S. Was our highest fundraiser last week and she earned a $5.00 gift
card to Borders. We have two more Fridays to collect pop can money and each
Friday a student will be rewarded a gift card to Borders. Thank you for all
your support and kindness through this fundraiser. I understand fundraisers
are a pain sometimes but...it will all be worth it when we are building
memories on the school ship and in Grand Rapids! Thank You!

I hope you have a wonderful spring break! For those of you
traveling to somewhere warm soak up some rays for me. - Laine Kyser :)

March 7th
Dear Parents and Students,
I just wanted to let you know that our fundraiser went home today. We are
doing a pop can drive starting today through April 7th. All the information
went home today look for it in your student’s homework folder. Basically for
our two main trips, which are the Inland Seas a trip out on West Bay on the
Manitou and our end of the year trip to Grand Rapids. The Grand Rapids trip
will consist of going to Van Andel Museum, eating lunch outside then off to
John Ball Zoo. This is a very fun day. Lots more details will be coming the
closer we get to these trips. Our main goal right now is to raise $3,100.00
for these two trips for both 5th grades classes to attend. It ends up being
roughly $ 60.00 per child. If we can raise the money through this fundraiser
it would be a huge relief for many families. With money being tight due to
the economy being poor this fundraiser can really help out. I am NOT
encouraging any student to go door to door asking for donations. I would
like students to go to family and friends to get pop cans to be on the safe
side. If you have any questions about this please contact me.

March is going by quickly...enjoy the sun when we get it :)

February 15th

Hello everyone! Thank you to the parents of our Valentines Day committee for
providing our class with yummy “healthy” snacks for our party. The students
had a blast and the food was wonderful!

Next week Friday Feb. 22 we will be having lung dissection. I need a few
more helpers for this event if you have the time please let me know I could
use your help during this busy time. The girls and boys will be dissecting
separately due to puberty Ed times. Boys will have puberty Ed first at 10:40
in Mr. Sattlers room. I will not be in on this meeting because I will be
running dissection for the girls and the boys will be more comfortable if I
am not in on this event. Mr. Sattler will be in the room monitoring the boys
while the school nurse talks to the boys. After their puberty Ed they will
dissect at 11:40 in my classroom or Mrs. Westermans. Girls will have the
opposite schedule dissection first then puberty Ed with the school nurse and
Mrs. Trapp. Mrs. Trapp will help monitor the students while the school nurse
teaches her lesson. I wish I could go with the girls but I am in charge of
the dissection for both girls and boys. Hopefully that made sense if not
give me a call and I can clarify.

As a reminder there is no school on Monday for students.
Have a great week! -Mrs. Kyser

February 4th

We have a very busy week ahead of us. Tuesday EJH and WJH bands will be
coming to perform in Lars for our students. I was just informed that we will
be fitting students for instruments on Feb. 15 for next year. Please
talk with your student on the instrument they would like to play if they are
interested for next year. Thursday we have our music program. There will be
two performances. The first one is at 1:30pm in Lars and the other time is
7:00 in the evening. On Friday WJH will be coming to Lars to talk with all
5th graders and inform them of transitions for next year and answer any
questions they might have. Hope to see you at the music program this week!

January 27th

Currently in Mrs. Kyser’s class we have been working very hard on learning
about fractions. Or fraction snack party was a lot of fun. I was amazed at
how many students remembered to bring their food item even when a snow day
got in the way. The students learned a lot on how they were going to share
their food and how they would write that amount into a fraction. It was a
lot of fun!

HELP! It is our turn for my class to sponsor popcorn day which will be this
Friday Feb. 1st. I only have one parent volunteer for Friday and could use a
couple more. It starts at 8am and is usually done by 11am. Please let me
know if you are available to help. All proceeds for popcorn day come
directly to our classroom. Thank you!

I am going to start hunting around for a good fundraiser for my class to
participate in. We need to raise a good amount of money to help fund our
end of the year trip to Grand Rapids and the school ship field trip. If you
have any good ideas for a fundraiser feel free to contact me.

On Monday your student will be taking the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test
which is designed to measure abstract thinking and reasoning ability.

Starting this week we will have a special guest in our classroom for three
hours a week. Her name is Diana Hart and she is a senior at West High
School. She will be coming into the classroom three days a week to help out
and see what it is like to be a 5th grade teacher. This is a wonderful
opportunity for her and we are excited for her to join our class!
Report Cards will be sent home on Friday. If you have any questions,
comments or concerns please feel free to contact me as soon as possible.
Enjoy the next few weeks! -Mrs. Kyser

January 13th

Last week was one of the most productive weeks I believe we have had this
year! I was amazed with the students responsibility and quality of work
they put into each assignment. It was a great week and I look forward to
more weeks like that to follow.

Please remind your student to wear a coat at recess. It is still too cold
to go without. Gloves and hats are an awesome choice also for all students.

The end of the marking period is fast approaching (Jan. 25) I will be
holding students in from recess to complete any missing assignements.

Enjoy the week! -Mrs. K

January 3rd

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful and relaxing winter break.
I sure enjoyed my time off playing in the snow and reading many books. :)
This New Year is going to be filled with a lot of growth for your child. I
will work very hard at pushing your child to strive to their absolute best
and learn as much as possible. This New Year brings a lot of growth that
still needs to be made in order for the students to be prepared for junior
high. I will be working very hard teaching more about
personal “responsibility”. This is a word that probably rings true to about
a quarter of the class. The rest of the class needs to really focus on
taking responsibility for their behavior and academics. In junior high they
will not have a personal teacher making sure all their work is in time.
There will not be anyone to hold them in for recess because of missing
work. I will focus on working with all the students in taking
responsibility of completing all of their work at their highest level.
Parents please help with this huge task at home also. If we work together
it will make the transition easier for the student. No need to worry they
will all be ok next year. If you are concerned and would like to talk about
it, you may contact me anytime. Enjoy the snowy weather remember how
beautiful it is when the sun is out and the snow is glistening.

*Special News* - Conor Lynch won our class Geography Bee! He will be in a
district wide Bee January 8th from 8:30am - 9:30am. Anyone is welcome to
cheer him on in Lars. Way to go Conor!
