Curriculum

Here’s a quick overview of the 3rd grade curriculum!

Math:  Our units will cover a variety of topics such as

·        graphing

·        place value & counting

·        money & time

·        adding & subtracting (single & double digit)

·        measurement

·        multiplication & division

·        reading & writing decimals

·        geometry

·        fractions

The “biggie” for 3rd grade math will be learning how to multiply.  We will learn the facts in groups and make a banana split at the same time.  Your child will take timed tests focusing on addition and subtraction the first half of the year with multiplication and division tests following later in the year.

Social Studies:  We will be learning about and exploring our great state of Michigan!  We’ll cover Michigan’s first people, becoming a state, products and cities, our government and more.  Hands on activities and projects will be intermixed with notes and tests.

Science:  Each unit covered will contain a combination of experiments and text. I strongly believe that kids learn science best by experiencing what they read.  Here are some of the topics we’ll cover:

·        life cycles of plants & animals

·        roles of living things

·        solar system

·        digestive system

Occasionally, students will be given opportunities to bring in things related to the current unit.  If you have any scientific type supplies at home that you no longer want, please let me know before you dispose of them.  They may come in handy for our classroom. J

Bible: Our Bible curriculum focuses on the Old Testament beginning with Genesis and going through the Judges.  Bible memory work will be connected to the lessons and will often be taught using a variety of motions.  Typically acting out a memory verse helps with retention.

English:   Attention will focus on basic grammar skills such as:

·        nouns  (common, proper, possessive)

·        verbs (action, linking, helping)

·        adverbs

·        adjectives

·        pronouns

·        types of sentences

Grammar is taught separately but then will be integrated into spelling practice as well as our writing time.

Reading:  The first part of the year we will be reading their basal reading books and engaging in a skills such as:

·        main idea and detail

·        comprehension strategies

·        story mapping

·        prediction making

·        cause & effect

·        oral interpretation

During the later part of the year, the students will form book clubs and read a variety of novels.  Students are also required to read one chapter book a month and will do a variety of reports/projects.  All chapter books must be teacher approved.  We will also be using a systematic approach to reading called S.R.A.

Writing:   We will be following the 6 +1 Traits of Writing Model using authors Shirley Poulton and Ruth Culham as our guides.  The traits of good writing are:  ideas, voice, word choice, sentence fluency,  conventions, organization, and presentation (+1).

Spelling:  Students will take a practice test each Monday. This pretest will determine their words for the test on Friday.  Time will also be spent studying spelling patterns and words through the manipulation of word cards and an in-class word wall. Check out the website (language arts links) for a great site you can use at home for spelling practice (spelling city).
