How much homework should my child have?

5th graders should expect about 30 - 45 minutes of homework a
night. In
addition to this, they are expected to read for Accelerated
Reader each
night. Most students will have math homework almost every
night. In the
other subjects, most homework is classwork that has not been
completed in
class. There are sometimes long term projects in Social Studies
but
students will have class time to work on these also.

What is Accelerated Reader and STAR?

Accelerated Reader is a computer assisted reading program.
Students read
from a selected list of books and then take a quiz on the
computer network
at school. They earn points based on the difficulty of the book
(Book
Level). Students will have a points goal each marking period.

STAR is a reading comprehension quiz taken on the school computer
network
that gives a recommended Book Level for each student.
