The Great Poetry Race

Great Poetry Race

11/01/10- This week we will begin the Great Poetry Race in our classroom. Each week, your child will receive a poem to read to as many different people as they can. Each time he/she reads this poem to someone, the listener needs to sign the back of the poem. Reading and re-reading poetry helps build fluency for young readers. At the end of the week, the student in our class who reads the poem to the most people will have their name added to the Great Poetry Race poster being displayed in the classroom. The poems, with signatures, are due each Monday and the reader’s name will be added to the poster on Tuesday.

Happy Reading!!!!

You can read your poem to...
Grandma and Grandpa
Mom and Dad
Sisters and Brothers
Aunts and Uncles
Babysitters
Neighbors
Friends
Cousins
TV repair man :)
Doctor
Anyone else you can think of!

This a a great way to practice fluency and have a little fun while we are at it!  Being a fluent reader means that you can read something without having to stop and sound out a lot of words.  This is important because if it is easier for you to read, it should be easier for you to understand what you are reading!  Comprehension is the ultimate goal of reading!  :-)

To help develop our fluency, we are going to have a weekly poetry race starting in November.   You will get a poem each week and the person who reads it to the most people by the following week will get a spot on the Great Poetry Race "trophy"!  Remember, one reading is equal to one signature, even if more than one person is listening.
