St. Michael Lutheran School Dress Code
(revised as of June 2007)
1. PANTS/SHORTS:
*Dress style
*Jeans (other than blue)
*Cargo
*Carpenter Style
*Bottoms are to be solid, stiped, or plaid. (No
pictures, patterns, or prints of any kind).
*No fads such as baggy, low rider,sagged,bell-
bottom, etc. are allowed.
*Shorts may be no more than 3 in. above the knee.
*Camouflage,rivets, embroidery, etc. are not allowed
*Girls my wear capris as long as they follow the same
criteria as pants.
2. SHIRTS: *Shirts must have a collar.
*(example -polo shirts, turtlenecks, oxford style
button down shirts)
*Shirts with finished hems may be worn out, and must be
long enough that the torso never shows.
*Styles with “shirttails” must be tucked in.
*Shirts must be properly buttoned (no more than two
buttons undone).
*Shirts must have either long or short sleeves.
*Shirts are to be solid, striped, or plaid. (No
pictures, patterns or prints of any kind.)
3. SWEATSHIRTS & SWEATERS: *All sweaters should give a dressed-up
impression.
*V-neck, crew, or cardigan may be worn only with
a collared shirt underneath.
*Sweatshirts & sweaters may not have pouch-style
pockets, hoods, or pictures/patterns/prints of any kind.
*A shrug is not considered a sweater.
4. SHOES: *Must have closed toes, keeping in mind safety on the playground
or in the gym.
*Girls may wear heels no higher than 2 inches.
5. OTHER: *No clothing may have a logo or insignia larger than two inches
(example: Nike swoosh or Polo horse), unless it is the St. Michael Logo.
*Clothing must be free from holes or fraying.
*Pants should not touch the ground.
*Blue denim may only be worn on Fridays.
*Anything considered wear for outside (coats,jackets,ponchos,
sunglasses, hats) should not be worn in the school building.
*Girls only may have pierced ears. No other piercings are
allowed.
*Hair (for boys) must be neatly trimmed: hair must not touch
the collar and must be kept out of the eyes.
*Hair may be highlighted, but in no unnatural colors.
*Clothing may not be sheer, immodest, tight, or baggy.
6. EXCEPTIONS: *On “Casual Fridays”, the following are allowed:
- Blue denim clothing items which otherwise conform to the dress
code.
- T-shirts in good condition (no insignias or logos larger than 2”).
- Hooded sweatshirts, with or without pouch pockets; either plain or
with St. Michael insignia or local high school insignia.
- Scout uniforms may be worn on appropriate days.
- Lutheran Schools Week (dress to be announced)
- Field Day (dress to be announced)
7. SKORTS, SKIRTS, DRESSES
*Must have collars and sleeves, jumpers must have collard shirt
underneath.
*Must be worn in modest length, no more than three inches above the
knee. Bike shorts in navy or black may be worn underneath, but should not
show.
8. Makeup: *Clear lip gloss is the only acceptable makeup, acknowledging
that children are naturally beautiful.
CONSEQUENCES FOR NON-COMPLIANCE
1. First offense will result in a note sent home, and student will not
participate in the next “Casual Friday”.
2. Second offense will cause the student to be sent to the office until
such time as appropriate dress is brought to the school by a parent or
guardian, and student will not participate in the next “Casual Friday”.
3. Further non-compliance will be dealt with on a case by case basis, with
suspension after the 3rd violation in a given quarter.
*an offense includes either being out of dress code, or failing to observe
the loss of a casual Friday.
