A genre refers to the type of literature you are reading. This chart shows the various kinds of genres you can choose from.
Realistic Fiction
A story using made-up characters that takes place in modern times
Mystery
A suspenseful story about a puzzling event that is not solved until the end of the story
Adventure
Often stories of survival or tales of great quests
Fantasy
A story including elements that are impossible, such as talking animals or magical powers
Poetry
A way to creatively express ideas and reflect a keen awareness of language
Magazines/Newspapers
Periodicals that usually contain a miscellaneous collection of articles, poems, stories, interviews, and pictures.
Nonfiction-Informational
All of the information is based on true facts and is not made up
Historical Fiction
A story using made-up characters that takes place in a real time or setting from the past
Traditional
A story that is passed down from person to person
Science Fiction
A story that blends futuristic technology with scientific fact and fiction
Biography
A story of a real person’s life that is written by another person
