Comprehension Strategies Good Readers Use

Below are a list of questions that we often go over when reading. These are great questions to ask your child when reading at home!

* Creating mental imagesMake a movie in your mind! Picture the action of the story, can describe what characters look like, where the story takes place, etc. Be aware of the sensory images in the writing—the smells, sights, sounds, and textures of the story.

* Summarizing-  Retell the story in your own words.

* Sequencing-  Put main events of the story/plot in order (beginning, middle, end).

* Inferencing-  Think about things the author didn't come out and say. “Read between the lines” to find out unknown words, characters moods and feelings, and predict what will happen in the story.

* Self-questioning-  Ask questions while reading: Who? What? Where? When? Why? How? and also What if ...? Why did...? I wonder...? What would happen if...?

* Problem-solving-  What is the problem the character(s) are having? How is it solved?

* Relating background knowledge-  Make connections between what you as a reader have experienced and what is happening in the story.

* Finding the main idea, important facts, and supporting details-  Sort out all of the information and figure out what is important and what is not.

* Distinguishing between realism and fantasy-  Is this something that could really happen or is it make-believe?
