The first grade curriculum starts off with reviewing all of the concepts that were taught in Kindergarten. During the 2nd quarter, the curriculum becomes more challenging as the students are introduced to new concepts and skills. Many of these concepts and skills are built upon each other.
Important things to note:
Reading/phonics:
-there will be small vocabulary and comprehension quizzes each week on the story in our reading book that we've read.
- As the year progresses, students will be reading various books (as a whole class and invidivually) and complete Accelerated Reader comprehension questions.
- Reading level assessments will be given throughout the year to determine reading level.
Spelling:
Spelling words are distributed in the beginning of each school week and tests are every Friday (unless otherwise noted).
Writing: Students will be working on grammar rules and explore various writing styles while using the writing process.
Math: We have Mad Minute Math sheets to practice our addition and subtraction facts. Students complete a sheet containing a number of addition and/or subtraction facts. They will be given one minute to answer as many facts as they can correctly. These will not be part of their grades, but are very important to practice at home.
Religion:
Along with specific lessons on faith, I try to integrate religion into all our core subjects.
Science and Social Studies:
Social Studies will be taught the first two quarters and Science will be taught the last two quarters. I try to integrate both throughout the year.
