MIDDLE SCHOOL/HIGH SCHOOL SCHOOL BUS TRAINING (GRADES 7-10)
THE DRIVER IS THE BOSS OF THE BUS. IF YOU THINK YOU ARE BEING ASKED TO DO SOMETHING UNREASONABLE, CALL THE BUS GARAGE OR SCHOOL AFTER ROUTE. THE VIDEOTAPE WILL BE REVIEWED. IT IS NOT WORTH GETTING IN A FIGHT WITH AN ADULT.
WITH THEIR SEAT ON THE SEAT AND THEIR BACK ON THE BACK.
AND 70 OF THEM KEEP VOLUME DOWN.
2. DRIVING AROUND SCHOOL BUSES
EIGHT-WAY SYSTEM SCHOOL BUSES HAVE AN EIGHT-WAY SYSTEM WHICH IS USED WHEN LOADING AND UNLOADING STUDENTS. THE AMBER LIGHTS WARN THE DRIVERS AROUND THEM THAT THE BUS WILL BE COMING TO A STOP. THE AMBERS MEAN PREPARE TO STOP NOT GET AROUND THE BUS AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE! IT IS AGAINST THE LAW TO GO THROUGH THE RED LIGHTS OF A SCHOOL BUS EITHER ON THE RIGHT OR THE LEFT. WHILE IT IS OKAY TO MAKE A RIGHT OR LEFT TURN IN FRONT OF THE BUS AT AN INTERSECTION WHEN THE RED LIGHTS ARE FLASHING, GOOD JUDGEMENT NEEDS TO BE USED. CHILDREN DO NOT ALWAYS CROSS CORNER TO CORNER AND MIGHT COME ACROSS THE STREET DIAGONALLY. EXTRA CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN IF THE DECISION IS MADE TO MAKE A TURN IN FRONT OF THE BUS.
HAZARD LIGHTS SCHOOL BUS (AND SEMI) DRIVERS WILL PUT ON THEIR HAZARD LIGHTS TO WARN OTHER DRIVERS OF POTENTIAL DANGERS AHEAD. UNLESS THE SCHOOL BUS (OR SEMI) HAS PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, STAY BEHIND THE VEHICLE. ON THE HIGHWAY, LARGE VEHICLES PUT ON THEIR HAZARDS IF THEY HAVE NOT REACHED 15 MILES PER HOUR BELOW THE POSTED SPEED. YOU WILL USUALLY SEE THIS AT THE INTERSECTION OF 52 AND 24 AS THE VEHICLES ENTER THE INTERSTATE OR MID-WAY UP WAGNER HILL (STEEP GRADES). PASS THE VEHICLES WITH CAUTION.
DANGER ZONE KEEP THE DANGER ZONE IN MIND WHEN DRIVING ALONG SIDE OR BEHIND LARGE VEHICLES. A GOOD THING TO REMEMBER IS: IF YOU CAN’T SEE THEIR MIRRORS, THEY CAN’T SEE YOU. WHEN STUDENTS ARE WAITING TO BOARD THE BUSES AFTER SCHOOL, THEY MUST STAY BEHIND THE YELLOW LINE IN ORDER TO BE SEEN AND AVOID BEING HIT WITH THE CROSS-OVER MIRRORS
BRAKING DISTANCE LARGE VEHICLES TAKE LONGER TO STOP THAN CARS. WHEN PASSING A LARGE VEHICLE, DO NOT MOVE BACK INTO THE RIGHT LANE UNTIL YOU CAN SEE THE ENTIRE FRONT SIDE OF THE LARGE VEHICLE IN YOUR REARVIEW MIRROR. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE SPACE TO PASS THE VEHICLE AND ALLOW THE ROOM IN FRONT, WAIT-IT IS NOT WORTH YOUR LIFE.
RAILROAD CROSSINGS SCHOOL BUSES AND SOME SEMI TRUCKS ARE REQUIRED TO STOP AT ALL RAILROAD CROSSINGS. THE VEHICLES WILL MOVE INTO A TRUCK LANE WHEN AVAILABLE. BE PREPARED TO STOP IF A RAILROAD CROSSING IS COMING UP AND YOU KNOW THERE IS NOT A SEPARATE LANE.
SCHOOL BUSES WHEN YOU ARE DRIVING AROUND THE SCHOOL
AT THE SCHOOLS BUSES AT THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, KEEP IN MIND THAT TWO OF THE BUSES DROP ALONG THE CAR CURBING. ALL SCHOOL BUSES INCLUDING THE SCHOOL VANS, HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY AT THE SCHOOLS. THE ONLY EXCEPTION IS THE CROSSWALK. ALLOW EXTRA TIME TO DROP OFF STUDENTS AT THE ELEMENTARY AND INSTRUCT THE YOUNGER STUDENTS TO CROSS AT THE CROSSWALK BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL IF YOU ARE NOT USING THE CURB. THE HIGH SCHOOL PARKING LOT IN THE REAR OF THE SCHOOL IS THE BEST AREA TO PICK UP AND DROP OFF AT THE HIGH SCHOOL TO AVOID THE SCHOOL BUS TRAFFIC. TAKE CARE WHEN CROSSING IN FRONT OF THE BUSES IN FRONT OF THE SCHOOL AT THE CROSSWALK. AS ALWAYS, MAKE SURE THE DRIVER SEES YOU.
SCHOOL BUS IN THE EVENT OF A SCHOOL BUS EVACUATION,
EMERGENCIES AND THE STUDENTS SHOULD EXIT THE BUS USING
EVACUATIONS THE CLOSEST EXIT (ALWAYS REMEMBER THE
FRONT DOOR). THE WINDSHIELD OF THE BUS
CAN EASILY BE POPPED OUT BY PLACING YOUR
FOOT ON THE WINDOW AND APPLYING PRESSURE. ALSO, ALL SIDE AND BACK WINDOWS OF THE BUS ARE DESIGNED TO COME OUT IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY. OLDER STUDENTS SHOULD HELP YOUNGER STUDENTS TO SAFETY IF IT DOES NOT ENDANGER THEM.
IF AN EMERGENCY OCCURS WITH THE BUS DRIVER, THE STUDENTS SHOULD BE PREPARED TO CONTACT THE BUS GARAGE USING THE 2-WAY RADIO. THE MICROPHONE FOR THE 2-WAY IS WIDE AT THE TOP AND SMALLER AT THE BOTTOM. THE STUDENT SHOULD CALL INTO THE GARAGE STATING THEY HAVE AN EMERGENCY. THE DISPATCHER WILL ASK THE ROUTE NUMBER, AND THE STUDENT’S NAME. THE DISPATCHER WILL ALSO ASK LOCATION. IF THE STUDENT DOES NOT KNOW WHERE THEY ARE, WE CAN TRACE THE ROUTE BY WHO IS STILL ON THE BUS.
THE DISPATCHER WILL ALSO ASK IF AN AMBULANCE IS NEEDED. THERE IS NO WRONG ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION. WHEN IN DOUBT ASK FOR THE AMBULANCE.
STUDENTS NEED TO REMEMBER THAT THE ABOVE RULES AND PROCEDURES APPLY TO THE SCHOOL BUS WHETHER THEY ARE GOING TO AND FROM SCHOOL OR ARE ON AN ACTIVITY OR FIELD TRIP.
