Pneumatic Legos
Objectives : This unit involves building, inventing, following directions, and creating Pneumatic Lego machines. Vocabulary: pneumatic, pulley, cylinder, bushing, fluid power Vocabulary Words need to be written correctly, numbered, underlined, include part of speech (noun, verb, adjective, adverb), and have the science definition for each word. Assignments: Students begin with "Blue Cards." They must follow directions on the inside of each card to build a model of an existing fluid powered machine. They work through these cards at their own pace. Once the inside directions model is completed they journal about what they have built and then go on to the back of the blue card. The back of the card has a picture of a Lego model with no directions. Students must look at the picture and figure out how they are going to build. After the five "Blue Cards" are done, the students move into the "Yellow Cards." These cards have a picture showing a real pneumatic machine and the students must design and build a model of that machine. Once the five "Yellow Cards" are completed, the students then begin the "Red Cards." These cards have a problem the students must solve through building a model of a pneumatic machine. After each model is built and the students have checked out with me, they journal about their experience building their model. (see link below for questions sheet.) Evaluation: Students receive 5 points for each day they build. They keep all their points for the day as long as they are staying on task, keeping track of all their pieces, and working to the best of their ability.
Any lost/missing pieces cost the students $.10 and one point each from their grades. The money gathered is put toward buying new Lego pieces.
