Description: The sixth grade science program focuses on physical science. Scientific Method and critical thinking are emphasized in the exploratory activities. Duration: This class runs every other day for one year. Objectives/Outcomes: -Use scientific method to explore topics -Work cooperatively in groups on all labs -Connect classroom activities to daily life -Learn proper use of lab materials and equipment -Safely complete all activities -Apply classroom topics to activities and field trip Major topics addressed in this class are: -Magnetism and Electricity -Pneumatics -Mixtures and Solutions -Physical and Chemical Changes -Use of science to solve crimes (forensics)
- Policies: -Students will keep their work in their “Daily Work Packet” -Student will come prepared for class every day. -They will work cooperatively with their lab groups. -Most labs are graded as a group with an individual grading piece -Lab jobs rotate for various activities. Grading 60% of grade is daily work - Most labs are graded as a group with an individual grading piece - Students have a participation grade within the daily grade. They start with 50 participation points at the beginning of each quarter. If they come prepared, participate, and work with their groups, they keep all the points. 40% of grade is tests The grading curve for this class is as follows:
Late Work – For the first three quarters there is a subtraction of 10% on any work turned in up to one week late. After one week, missing work becomes a zero. There is no late work accepted fourth quarter. Absent Work – All make-up work will be dealt with on a student by student basis. Students should communicate with the teacher after any absences.
Science Field Trip – All students will take one science
