Minnesota Reading Corp The Cyrus School is currently participating in the Minnesota Reading Corp’s preschool literacy tutoring program. The Minnesota Reading Corps’ website states that their organization is a statewide initiative to help every Minnesota child become a successful reader by the end of 3rd grade. Reading Corp members work to implement research-based interventions in an effort to help struggling readers.
The Reading Corp staff members at CMST are Christy Hubbard and AnnaMary Erickson. Both are currently working in our preschool setting. The tasks of our member includes assisting in creating a literacy-rich environment in the preschool classroom, implementing interventions in the areas of rhyming, vocabulary development, alliteration, letter sounds, and letter naming, and collecting data for individual students so that interventions can be tailor-made for each child.
A visit into our preschool classroom one would see Christy or AnnaMary working one-on-one with individual children on pre-reading skills, reading stories to small groups of children, writing with children, engaging in chants and songs that teach rhyming skills, beginning letter identification and sounds. One also may find Christy or AnnaMary engaged in conversations with children to promote vocabulary development. Christy and AnnaMary spend time each week promoting literacy in the student’s homes through informational newsletters, literacy calendars, and nightly book reading. She also reads in other classrooms at CMST, volunteers in the District’s child-care center, and volunteers in the community. Christy recently was elected to serve on the Cyrus Board of Education.
We are fortunate to have the Minnesota Reading Corp preschool literacy program in our school and would like to celebrate the efforts of Christy Hubbard and AnnaMary Erickson, our Minnesota Reading Corp staff. They are an integral member of our team and are helping to ensure that all students will be successful.
