NEWS from D-17!
The Really Important Stuff!

Tomorrow is Spirit Day at KL. Students can wear black and orange or Halloween attire other than costumes.  We will celebrate the day with a fall festival in third grade.  In the afternoon, students will rotate to all the third grade classrooms and participate in fun fall activities. If anyone is available to put up a fall display of leaves in the atrium any time after 2:30 please let me know.

Third grade classrooms have started a Thanksgiving food drive that will run through November 23rd to help out families who are in need.  Nonperishable items can be dropped off in the front entryway of the school. They will be delivered to Interfaith Outreach. Thank you.

Conference slips confirming your time and day were sent home yesterday.  Please send the lower section back to me as soon as possible.

November Birthday: Taylor, 2nd.

Mark your calendars! We will be taking a field trip to the Science Museum on November 23rd.  Additional information will come home at a later date.

There will be no school for students on November 12th and 13th.  There will not be a spelling list or packet during that short week.

HOMEWORK Alert: October reading calendars will be accepted no later than Wednesday, Nov. 4th.

We are almost out of sharable snacks.  THANK you to all who so thoughtfully contribute snacks. It’s great to have something for the students who forget theirs.

We are hard at work! Please check out each subject area for more information. Thanks. Laura

MATH
We found our average class shoe length and measured items in our room using our “D-17 foot.”
We practiced measuring to the nearest inch, half inch, quarter inch, centimeter, and millimeter.
We explored rulers with half inch, quarter inch, and eight inch divisions.
We read about and compared the U.S. customary and metric units of measure.
We found personal reference items for U.S. customary and metric units.
We estimated and measured in U.S. customary and metric units.
We explored polygons and found their perimeters.
Home Connection!!
Practice math facts using fact families. We will be starting multiplication in about 1 week.  Students should know the basic addition and subtraction facts so they are ready to move on to multiplication.
Practice time skills, including finding elapsed time.
Measure objects to the nearest ¼ inch and ½ centimeter.
Keep up the good work on Home links!

LANGUAGE ARTS
The 2-page Family Times letters for all of the reading stories in Unit 2 are posted online at the Kimberly Lane website under Parents – Classrooms – Third Grade – Family Times. The Family Times explain an overview of the story, an optional family activity, the comprehension and grammar skills, and the story vocabulary. They are very informational. This week, we read Penguin Chick. Next week's story will be A Day's Work.

GRAMMAR
We have been learning about common and proper nouns.

WRITING
Our writing project for this week is to write a summary. We practiced identifying main ideas and important details.

SOCIAL STUDIES AND GEOGRAPHY
We will take our Unit 2 assessment on physical and political maps today. Our next unit will be about hemispheres, latitude, longitude, global addresses, and the alpha-numeric grid on a road map.
Home Connection!!
Practice learning the names and locations of the states. The Links page has some web sites to make practice fun.

HEALTH
We will start our next health unit called “The Better to See You With” next week. If anyone has a background in the human eye and is interested in coming into the classroom to share your knowledge, please contact me. Thank you.

SCIENCE
We have concluded our first science unit titled, “The Structures of Life.” The crayfish are moving on to a new home in another classroom.  The students are sad to see them go.
