NewsFlash

NEWS from D-17!
Thank you on behalf of the students and myself to all who so thoughtfully bought and donated a book from the book fair to our classroom library. It was wonderful to have the time to visit with all of you over conferences.

We have a field trip coming up next week, Nov. 23rd. We are going to the Science Museum. Buses will leave school at 9:15 and return to school about 2:00. STUDENTS WILL NEED A COMPLETELY DISPOSABLE BAG LUNCH & BEVERAGE FOR THE FIELD TRIP. Bags must be marked clearly with their name.

November 24th is Fall Colors Spirit Day at KL. Third graders are encouraged to wear something orange.

HOMEWORK Alert: Since there are only 2 days of school next week, there will be no spelling list for that week. The next spelling packet is due Dec. 2nd.  The November reading calendar is due Dec. 3rd.

December Birthdays: Charlie, 4th; Connor, 5th; Alaina, 12th; Ethan, 19th; Nick, 19th; Julia, 21st; Natalie, 27th

Thank you to all who contribute sharable snacks so that students who forget theirs can have one.

There are still several mittens that list gifts needed for Adopt-a-Family hanging on the bulletin board outside the front office. Please consider selecting a mitten or send in money or a gift card that can be used to purchase gifts for needy families. Thank you for your generosity.

We are hard at work! Please check out each subject area for more information. Thanks. Laura

We found out equal shares and equal groups of a whole.
We discussed multiplication fact triangles, fact shortcuts, and fact power.
Home Connection!!
Students should be frequently practicing the basic multiplication facts for 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10 unless they are fluent at them.
Practice time skills, including finding elapsed time.
Play games using math.
Measure objects to the nearest ¼ inch and ½ centimeter.
Keep up the good work on Homelinks!

LANGUAGE ARTS
The 2-page Family Times letters for all of the reading stories in Unit 2 are posted online at the Kimberly Lane website under Parents – Classrooms – Third Grade – Family Times. The Family Times explain an overview of the story, an optional family activity, the comprehension and grammar skills, and the story vocabulary. They are very informational. This week, we read Prudy’s Problem. Nov. 30th we will start Tops and Bottoms.

GRAMMAR
We learned about irregular plural nouns. Next we will learn about singular and plural possessive nouns.

WRITING
Our writing project for this week is to write about a time when we had a problem with a friend and explain how we solved the problem.

SOCIAL STUDIES AND GEOGRAPHY
We have started learning about the Northeast region. We are working on maps of these states. The students will take the states and capitals test for this region on Dec. 1.
Home Connection!!
Practice learning the names and locations of the states of the Northeast region.

HEALTH
We concluded “Let’s Eat.” Next month’s health unit called “Community Health.”

SCIENCE
We have started the Sun, Moon, and Stars unit. We observed changes in the position of the sun over a day. We traced our shadows three different times in a day and examined the changes. We have read about the Sun and shadows. Students are encouraged to look for and carefully observe the Moon any chance they get. We will start to study the phases of the Moon after Thanksgiving.
