New addition to the newsflash- The computer teacher, Victoria, could use another parent volunteer this Friday and again on January 6th. Please email me if you can help and I will pass that information on to her. Thanks!
This is the last newsletter before winter break. I hope you have a wonderful break filled with laughter, good friends, family, fun, and enough pauses to make it through the busyness of the season!
The Really Important Stuff!
We are getting a student teacher in January. She wrote this to introduce herself to all of you.
Hello! My name is Lindsey Meyer and I will be student teaching in Mrs. Dobosenski’s class from January to March. I am a graduate student at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and am seeking my teaching license in Early Childhood Education. I received my undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education and Early Childhood Special Education from the University in 2008. I grew up on a hobby farm in Rockford, MN where my family has horses, goats, chickens, cats, and dogs. I was an exchange student in Finland during my junior of high school. Some of my hobbies include taking care of animals, reading, traveling, and playing board games. Teaching is an important part of my life and I am excited to start student teaching in January.
The scheduled observations of the night sky did not go as well as I had hoped. We had too many cloudy nights but the students hopefully will continue to observe the night sky. Students can go to the Links page on our web site and scroll down to the Foss website. If they click on Sun, Moon, and Stars they can explore the phases of the Moon in Lunar Calendar and view star maps.
Tuesday, December 22nd, we are pushing the desks aside and getting comfortable to read, read, read! It is also Wayzata spirit day at KL, so the students are encouraged to wear blue and yellow. They should wear comfortable clothing and can bring a towel, blanket, and/or pillow to use. I will serve hot chocolate while we read. In the afternoon, we will watch the Felicity movie that goes with the American Revolution and the books we have been reading.
December Birthdays: Charlie, 4th; Connor, 5th; Alaina, 12th; Ethan, 19th; Nick, 19th; Julia, 21st; Natalie, 27th
January Birthdays: Cole T. 19th
We are almost out of sharable snacks. Thank you for any donations on behalf of all the students who occasionally forget their snacks.
I am sending the spelling packet that is due January 6th home with students before break. There will be no math home links over winter break.
I am also sending home the dates for the next three regions that will be tested for states and capitals. Look in this week’s Thursday folder.
We are still hard at work! Sometime I pause and just reflect on how far the students have come since the beginning of the school year, and it amazes me! Please check out each subject area for more information. Thanks. Laura
MATH
We have reviewed place value to the millions.
We compared and ordered 5-and 6-digit numbers.
We compared very large numbers using the U.S. census data.
We modeled decimals using money and base-10 blocks.
We wrote the equivalent fraction model for decimals through the hundredths.
We reviewed centimeters and millimeters and practiced writing the decimal notations for metric measures.
We practiced decimals to the thousandths.
We will take the Unit 5 test Friday this week or Monday next week.
Home Connection!!
Students should be frequently practicing the basic multiplication facts for 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10 unless they are fluent at them. Practice time skills, including finding elapsed time. Play games using math. Keep up the good work on Homelinks!
LANGUAGE ARTS
NEW!! The 2-page Family Times letters for all of the new reading stories in Unit 3 are posted online at the Kimberly Lane website under Parents – Classrooms – Third Grade – Family Times. The Family Times explain an overview of the story, an optional family activity, the comprehension and grammar skills, and the story vocabulary. They are very informational. The first week back in January we will read Pushing Up the Sky. The story goes great with the Sun, Moon, and Stars science unit!
GRAMMAR
We learned about singular and plural possessive nouns.
WRITING
We are working on writing about one main idea and adding supporting details.
SOCIAL STUDIES AND GEOGRAPHY
We made our flipbooks of the South Central Region, which includes the states Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. We have begun to work on the maps and bookmarks. Students should be studying for the states and capitals test that will be on December 17th. Any students who does not get them all correct can retake the test once a day as many times as they want to in order to improve their scores. I keep their highest score. Students need to ask me for another copy of the test when they are ready to try it again. The goal is to learn the states and capitals.
Central region test will be Jan. 8th.
North Central region test will be Jan. 21st.
Northwest region test will be Feb. 4th. Look for information in today’s Thursday folder.
Practice learning the names and locations of the states of the South Central region.
HEALTH
Our current health unit is called “Community Health.”
SCIENCE
We concluded the Sun, Moon, and Stars unit. I encourage you to go through the science notebook with your child when it comes home as it is packed full of great information! Over break if there are opportunities to observe and discuss the phases of the moon or constellations, please take advantage of those. The Foss web site has helpful star maps and Lunar Calendar. You can get to it through my Links page.
