Process

You will be working in a four person cooperative group. For part of the
time you will be exploring differing opinions on the current status of our
Bill of Rights. Working with one other “opinion partner” in your group, you
will be asigned either the “Civic Defender”(pro-restrictions) or the “Civil
Libertarian” (con-restrictions) viewpoint to study and defend. When your
cooperative group reassembles, you will be responsible to present
arguments for your point of view.

Your final goal as a group is to create a graphic organizer of the differing
opinions and supporting facts. You will then be able to take a print out of
this list to have on hand as you write your opinion letter to the
StarTribune.

Step One:
Your first step will be to reread the Bill of Rights. You can read the Bill
of Rights in your text book or at:
House OKs counter-terrorism bill; Bush could sign measure
as soon as Friday,
James Kuhnhenn, Knight Ridder Newspapers, October 24, 2001

The USA PATRIOT Act seems to conflict with what sections of the Bill of
Rights? Write a comparison by pairing the specific wording in the Bill of
Rights with comparable components of the PATRIOT ACT.

Step Two:
Move to your assigned positions to find out more about the controversy
surrounding the Bill of Rights (post 9.11).
