will cause a shudder in world markets. If you wish to watch it, go to
Google.com and used the "pull-down" menu to go to Google Finance. Then watch
the world markets on the middle right side of the page, and, of course, the

You will work with one (1) other person. 
Log into your Google Apps account --
Go to the OSH Home Page--> Click on "Research Links"---> scroll down and click
on "Moodle"--
--> Enter your user name and password and click "enter"---> On lower right
side of screen find 
"Docs" and click on it--On upper left pull-down choose "Presentation". Now you
can start creating 
your slideshow. To add your partner--click on "Share" on the right side near
top and enter their 
username@apps.district279.org. Be sure to click "to edit".  (Just on this
first practice piece, you might 
try adding more than just one partner to see how it works.)

(You will get used to this log-in procedure) I would suggest that on day 1,
you do a practice 
"presentation" for you and your partner. Try the system to see how you each

4) Find "Docs" on the lower right side of the page and *click* "Docs".

5) There will be a "Captcha" image to copy and click on "Accept" lower on the

6) Try "Create New" and "Presentation" from the pull-down menu.

THURSDAY 10/1/09 COMPUTER LAB:
Note: We are in the lab only Thursday. Your work is due on Monday, 10/5/09.

The basic thesis is that the Free Market system gives a better quality of 
life. Support or reject this thesis with facts about the standard of living 
in  
at least 2 countries. You should have a short paper as the result and you 
must 
have references/sources.

With a partner you will choose at least 2 countries of the world, one Free
Market and one Command Economy compare their "stats". One country should be in
the top 15 on the Heritage Foundation's list. The other should be from the
bottom 20. 
 
Go to "Economics Handouts and Worksheets" and download the

Divide up the work and see how life is in the two places.

You will use the information and data provided on the Heritage Foundation's

and the CIA World Factbook to compare the countries.

found in the countries of the world. 

2. View the PowerPoint "Communism Explained" and write about the origins of
communism.

communist nations are and were found.

WRITE AN ANSWER: How does Socialism differ from Communism?? (You may wish to

definitions of "Socialism" on the web, but be aware that Wiki's and Blogs do
not necessarily have safeguards of the truth built into them. 

5. Now, go to the "Index of Economic Freedom" posted by the conservative
"think tank", The Heritage Foundation. Choose a country from the top 15 and a
country from the bottom 15 and compare why this group has ranked that country
where it has.
