Benefits of Goal Setting
Since we have been in grade school we have always been told we need to have goals. We know we need to have them because everyone is always telling us we need them but they never quite really tell us or go in details as to what they are and why we need them. So I will try and shed some light on how you can get started.
It is critical that we write our goals down. When we write something down it becomes more powerful and it specifically reminds us what we are going to do. Less than 10% of the people in the US have their goals written down on a piece of paper. So as you continue to upgrade your goals from camp get out that pen and paper
The 5 benefits of goal setting.
1. They provide us with deadlines, they will give us direction, they need to be specific, they will be in all areas of our life and they will allow us to measure our progress.
Goals and wishes are much the same thing. The most defining thing that separates goals from wishes is that goals have a deadline, a time it ends. We cram the night before our final, wait till the last week of the semester to write out term paper and shop 3 days before Christmas. These are just some simple illustrations of how deadlines drive us to action. Without deadline we would get little done. So make sure you goals have a deadline
Before we can go anywhere or do anything we first need to know where we want to go or what we want to do…
2. Goals give us direction, there like the rudder of a ship they allow us to steer our course in the river of life. Without a rudder the ship is going to go where ever the river takes it. It is important to be able to steer (choose) our ship to where we want it to go. The beauty of life is we get to choose what we do with our life. So make sure you know where you want to go.
3. Goal will help you motivate. Goals need to be specific so that we know exactly what we are trying to do or accomplish. The more specific the better so we measure our progress. It is hard to focus on anything that is general in nature so the most specific you can make your goal the easier it is to focus on it. I don’t want to have a good season I want to make it to state, place at state or win it. Don’t be afraid to make your goals specific they will help motivate you to action.
4. Life improvement. Goals are not just for sports, school and work we need goals in every area of our lives. We need and can have travel goals, adventure, social, financial, personal, athletic, family, health goals and the list goes on and on. Think about all the areas in your life to want to do something or improve in an area then make a goal for it and get started.
5. Measure progress. The last things that goals do for use they help us measure our progress in where we are going. We all need help and direction from time to time and having goals that are written down remind us what we doing and what we need to do to accomplish them. As we are moving towards our goals it is great being able to see out progress and that progress motivates us even more in reaching our final destination. What we want is measureable progress in a reasonable amount of time. Goals help us keep things on track.
Setting goals is one of the best things you can do in choosing what you want to do with your life. There is nothing you cannot do once you set your mind to it but it will come at a price. Only you and you alone can decide the effort that you are going to invest to achieve your goal is worth the price you have to pay.
Don’t apologize for anything you want to do. Let your actions show people how important it is to you. As long as your doing everything in you power to achieve you goal reach for the stars. You will fall down a lot in life but if you keep getting up you will accomplish a lot.
The longest journey begins with the first step….so get started
6 Fundamentals
Wrestling and Life Skills
It has been an awhile since camp has been over and you should be in the heart of your wrestling season. Remember to stop and reflect on the six fundamentals life/wrestling skills that you learned and were reinforced while you were at camp. Take a couple minutes to ask yourself how you can incorporate these skills into your current life and training… Discipline, dedication, sacrifice, hard work, responsibility, and accountability.
Break down what things you think you need to do between now and your qualifying tournament for wrestling and school and then rely on these skills to help you organize your days to make improvement and daily progress.
Discipline: The most important of the 6 skills because it well help you do the things you might not want to do but will need to do to get better and improve. Notice I said, ‘you need to do’ to get better. There is a big difference in wanting and doing. “Once you start the discipline you will start getting the results. Once you start getting the results you won’t mind the discipline.
Dedication: Start now, dedicating yourself to doing the things you know you need to make time for to succeed. There isn’t that much time left before the qualifying tournaments so structure the hours in your day to get done what you need to do. Realizing that it is not a one day or one week process to your goal, you need to build on your improvements day after day, week after week. You will have to stay focused on what you need to do in order to do them.
Sacrifice: You don’t have that much time left for you to accomplish your wrestling goals this year. You need time and the only way to get more time is to give up something. You are going to have to sacrifice some things for you to make time to do what you must do. You will have to give up some of your free/ fun time to make time for what’s important now in your wrestling (drilling, technique, weight training). Learning to give up one thing to get another is one of the most valuable lessons and things you can ever learn to do.
Hard Work: The key that holds the other 5 together. You can out work 90% of the competition in any field of endeavor that you apply yourself. Hard work will not get you everything you want, as there will be times that you will miss your goal but with hard work you will get more than the majority of people do in their life. Remember you can always do more, before or after every class, practice, speech, term paper etc.
Responsibility: You may have heard me blare this at you constantly at camp this summer. ‘You are responsible for yourself. Your thoughts produce actions and those actions produce results (both good and bad). So work, study, and train as if everything depends on you.’
Accountability: In the end you well be accountable for the choices you are making for school, your social life and wrestling so make good choices. Even when presented a bad situation you have the option to make good choices. The more good choices you make, the better you will feel and the more confidence you will have in yourself. Good choices, in the end, allow you to feel positive (accountable) for the results of your decisions.
I believe that these 6 fundamentals are the key foundation to a great life. You will never quite master them and will spend your entire life working on them, but the more you work on them the better you’ll life will be. They are designed to be a standard or direction that will help to keep you on track on your life journey.
These fundamentals are no good unless you put them to work. Knowledge of knowing what to do is not the key to an excellent life; ACTION on a daily basis is the key.
Success is measured from the outside; Excellence is measured from the inside. You and you alone control what kind of life you will have.
