Many years ago, my parents initiated what became a lifelong involvement in
Catholic education when they sent my three brothers and me to St. Michael's
School in W. St. Paul. I attended Brady High School for one year. When
tuition rose to $495, I briefly left Catholic schools to earn money for
college. I had the opportunity to study in Austria and student teach in
Berlin,Germany before earning a teaching degree from the College of St. Benedict.
My inital plans were to teach abroad for a few years before returning home.
Shortly before leaving for Berlin, I met a volunteer program recruiter while
walking through Mary Commons at the college. After much discernment, I joined
the VIDA program which placed me in a small Colorado town teaching for two
years. It was a formational experience that I thank God for regularly.
I joined the St Joseph's faculty in 1980. In the years since, I've taught
students in grades fourth through eighth. I assumed an assistant principal
role that evolved from part to full time. During this transition, I taught JH
computer skills, JH general math, JH study skills and JH English.
I completed a master's degree in curriculum and instruction and an educational
specialist degree at the University of St. Thomas. In 1999, I became
principal at St Mary of the Lake School in White Bear Lake. I enjoyed my
administrative experiences both at St. Joseph's and St. Mary's, but I missed
the classroom experience. I returned to St Joseph's in 2003 as a sixth grade
classrom teacher and teacher of religion. I rejoined the JH faculty in 2004
as an English teacher
2011 brings another opportunity to teach religion. I am eager to explore the
Catholic faith with the seventh and eighth grade students as they prepare for
the sacrament of Confirmation.
