I am originally from a strong 4-H and farming background in Anderson,
Indiana, where most of my family still lives. I have raised just about every
kind of farm animal there is - horses, cows, pigs, sheep, chickens, cats,
chinchillas, parakeets. My background includes a BS and MS in Biology and
Chemistry from Purdue University. My teaching career of 33 years started with
5 years teaching high school biology and earth science classes, then included
physical science, in Kokomo, and Greentown, Indiana.
A move to continue farming operations in Missouri in 1981 brought me
into the world of Catholic School teaching and the lower grades, 5-8.
My family moved to Minnesota in 1988 and my career at St. Joseph's began in
1989. This is my 23rd year teaching both 7th and 8th grade science at St.
Joseph's, serving as the Science Department Head, and Science Club advisor.
I have two children. Kris, 35, was a mechanical engineer for GM in
Indiana (his wife Julie was an industrial engineer there also), but he is
currently a design engineer for Jenner-Jahn in Indiana. They design and
manufacture the machines that cut huge rolls of things into small rolls - like
aluminum foil and masking tape. They are the proud parents of my two beautiful
granddaughters, Grace Caroline, now 8 years old, and Faith
Eveline, pictured above, 4 years.
My daughter, Kelly, 30, (a former graduate of St. Joseph's)graduated from
Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri, and is now teaching
kindergarten in that same area. She has completed her Masters degree
in professional counseling. She is married to Gary Peterson II, and they are
living in Wentzville, Missouri (northwest of St. Louis). Gary is teaching 9th
grade world history at Troy HS. He is the HS wrestling coach, and an assistant
football coach. They have a handsome active boy, Landon (15 months) and a
beautiful little girl, Anabelle (5 weeks).
My home is in Farmington, and on the rare occasions when I'm not
doing school work, I love to read, garden, and do needlework. My two gray
tiger cats, Bouncer (a Maine Coon cat)and Pouncer, keep me company. There are
lots of trips made traveling to be with my kids in Indiana and Missouri,
whenever we have time off from school.
My mission in teaching science is to show students how to enjoy and
appreciate the daily applications of it in their lives.
