Guatemalan Pen Pals

St. Joseph’s sister school and parish, is located in San José, Guatemala. Over the past five years we have developed a wonderful friendship and relationship with the children in San José.

Students at all grade levels participate in our pen pal project with the Guatemalan students. Throughout the school year, students put their Spanish language to use, by exchanging letters, drawings and photographs.

San José Pastor, Father Mario Ochoa, visits St. Joseph’s every spring and spends time in our Spanish classes.   A highlight is when Father Mario concelebrates a school mass.

Working with the Grace Centre*, a nonprofit organization devoted to helping the people of Guatemala by building lasting relationships, our students are learning the importance of building connections, communities and cultural awareness.  Through these friendships, we have learned first hand of their many needs and have been able to raise funds to help purchase school supplies for classrooms, build a nutrition center, open a village pharmacy and most recently a water filtration plant so that Guatemalan villagers will have fresh, drinkable water daily.
