Integration of Catholic Social Teachings in Curriculum and Grade Level Project
Our second graders develop a relationship with the elderly at Queen's Court.
Activities planned include: singing songs, delivering cards, presenting choral
readings and/or plays. We plan to visit on several of the following occasions:
*Halloween
*Christmas
*Valentine's Day
*Easter/spring
As part of this project, the second grade teachers are collecting books about
children and the elderly. We welcome any donations or suggestions.
This project is a way to teach the basic foundational principle of the life
and dignity of the human person, as we come to know some of the elderly in our
community.
This principle is also taught in the conflict resolution efforts we make,
having students use "eye-to-eye" to settle disagreements and hurt feelings.
The principles of option for the poor and vulnerable and solidarity are taught
through the Rice Bowl program and other mission opportunities throughout the year.
Rights and responsibilities, the dignity of work, and the call to family and
community are taught through the classroom jobs students share, in our morning
classroom meetings, and in social studies, as they study communities.
Care For God's creation is highlighted in the spring in science, as students
do Earth Week activities and as second graders plant bulbs as a part of the
school landscaping efforts.
Each of these principles can also be highlighted at many other times during
the year in all areas of the school day. A classroom poster demonstrating the
principles also helps children relate to and discuss these principles.
