How can I check on my child's grades throughout the quarter?

I strongly encourage you to monitor your child's grades every
week. The best way to monitor their grades is through the
school's Students 1st website. The site is located on the
school website's home page. I have also included a link on our
class page. If you do not have an account and password
established, please contact Central Office to help you get
started. I will enter the grades for each week by Monday
morning of the following week. If you ever have any questions,
please feel free to contact me.

What should I be looking for in my child's bag each night?

I am so thankful that you take the time to go through your
child's bag each night with them! Every night, your child will
bring home their Agenda and Homework Folder. The Agenda will list our
work for the day. I have the students circle any assignments
that need completion. All homework will be located in the
Homework Folder. Any letters for you or announcements will be placed in this folder,
as well, so be sure to check it even if they don't have
homework. Once you have checked your child's homework, please
initial your child's Agenda.
Every Monday night, be on the lookout for your child's Monday
Folder, as well. The Monday Folder will hold all of your
child's graded assignments from the previous week. Please
remove the assignments from the folder and look them over with
your child. Please sign inside the folder and return it empty
Tuesday morning.
*Keep in mind that all assignments are designed to prepare your
child for the required tests. If you have time, it is a great
idea to review missed questions and clear up any
misunderstandings. I will do my best to clear up
misunderstandings that I notice in class, but focused time at
home does wonders!

What is the policy for absent work?

We keep a packet for all absent students in our classroom each
day that they miss. When they return, they are responsible for
finding their packet (it will have their name circled on the top)
and completing the work. If they need any help with any of the
assignments, I will always be willing to help them during
Homework time. All absent work is due 2 days after the student
returns to school. We are also always willing to have your
child's absent work gathered and sent to the office for you to
pick up while your child is gone. If you have the opportunity,
advance notice is wonderful so that I can have it ready for you,
but it is not required. I can always gather the packet when you
arrive.

What is the policy for late work?

All late work should be turned in as soon as possible after the due date.
The last day that late work can be accepted is the final day of the Quarter.
During the first quarter, 10% will be deducted from the score of late work.
In the second quarter, 20% is deducted, then 30% is deducted in the 3rd and 4th quarters.
Please keep in mind that homework is designed to reinforce concepts
and is most effective when it is completed on time. Also, starting in the 2nd
quarter, all papers without names will be thrown away and will need to
be redone and turned in as late work.

What is the redo policy for low scores?

I will allow students to correct papers with a score of 70% or less.
I will then average the initial grade and the redo grade together for
a final grade. It will be the student’s responsibility to use a red pen
to add the correct answers to the original graded paper. Please do not
erase the previous incorrect answers, they help us to learn. All redo
papers should be placed in the “Redo” drawer. The student will have 3 class
days to complete the redo sheet in order to receive the averaged grade. Unfortunately,
I cannot accept redo papers for tests and quizzes.

What can I do to prevent my child from getting Swine Flu?

Unfortunately, the flu is hitting fast and hard! Here is an
excerpt that I received with Swine Flu information and prevention
measures.

The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a
global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible to avoid
coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions.
Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation
is.
While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1
infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of
symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very
simple steps can be practiced:
1. Frequent hand washing
2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch
any part of face.
3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if
you don't trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial
infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show
characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation.
In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a
healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't
underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative
method.
4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every
day with warm salt water . *Not everybody may be good at Jala
Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal
cavities), but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing
both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very
effective in bringing down viral population.*
Neti pots and sinus rinse kits are available at the drug store
and relatively inexpensive….under $15.
5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in
Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). *If you have to
supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has
Zinc to boost absorption.
6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can.
*Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in
the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from
the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive,
proliferate or do any harm.
