Will I have homework?
Yes, but not every night. If you do not get work finished in
class then it will become homework. If we have a lab, it is more
than likely that there will be homework in the form of reflection
questions.
What happens if I miss a lab?
If you miss a lab you can make it up after school one the day
within a week of the day you return. It will take approximately
35 minutes and you can take home the questions to answer. Just
get to me to arrange a time afterschool to make up the lab.It is
your responsiblity to arrange a time to make up the lab.
If I lose my papers, what can I do to get my work done?
If I do not have the assignment in the computer system under
docs/phots, then check my "Extra Papers" folder on topshelf of
the bookcase for extras. If all extras have been taken by
students, I can make you a copy from my master sheet, though you
will be charged for having a late assignment. It is never an
excuse to not do your work.
I forgot to turn in my homework. Can I still turn it in?
Yes, but there will be a penalty. You will recieve a deduction
for being late according to the class syllabus. If it has not
gone to Academic Probation (AP)yet, the assignment will be
accepted. If you had been sent to AP that week for the work and
had not turned it in by Thursday night of that week, then you
have recieved a zero and are not allowed to redo the work.
assignment.
What if I am absent on the day of a test? Can I make it up?
The day you return, you must take your test you missed.
(According to your Expectations and Procedures handout.)If you
know you are going to be absent, you can schedule to take the
test early.
I am struggling in class. What can I do?
If you are having trouble understanding a topic and/or are shy
about raising your hand in class to ask, I am available after
school for tutoring. Please feel free to make a tutoring
appointment.I have some extra credit available, if you are doing
the work and just want to improve your grade you can complete
that.
Is there a club for science and how do I join?
Yes, Mrs. Divine and I are sponsors for the science club.Every
student in junior high is welcome. (If you are on the AP
list and are not cleared, you may not come to the meeting that
week until cleared according to school AP rules.) We will meet
the first Wednesday of each month during first semester. The
club meets from 3:20-4:30 in room 108. We will have a group from
science club going to a regional science fair to compete with
projects.
Will you call my parents?
Yes, I try to maintain contact with your parents about what we
are studying in class and if you are struggling and might benefit
from some tutoring outside of the normal classtime. If you are
missing work or having behaviors that are getting in your way of
succeeding in class I will contact them so we can all work
together to help you get back on track.
What will we be studying this year?
I start the year off with a unit on experimental design that will
help us all think like scientist and learn how to test a
question. Then we will explore population and ecosystems. We
will tie in the relationship of water to our ecosystems. Around
Christmas we will be working with a kit called light. We will also
be studing some electric circuits. In the spring we will explore
the relationship of energy, machines and motions.
Why did you become a teacher?
I love sharing my love of science and reading with others. I
really love watching when my students "get" a concept. It is
like a lightbulb goes on and your faces just light up. I love
being able to share the adventure of discovering something for
the first time. I learn something from my students along the
way. Science is an every changing subject and I love learning
something along side my students and wondering at the
possibilities that science can hold for our future.
I also love sharing books that I have read and discussing them
with others. I really like your input on what books I should be
reading, too.
