What is Culture Club?
It's open to members from 6th, 7th and 8th Grades.
This year we will talk about and explore cultures different than our own, through cooking international recipes, inviting guest speakers to lead discussions about other cultures, making piñatas and friendship bracelets, watching music videos in other languages and sharing thoughts with epals from other countries. We also will explore ways we can help others in service projects.

We began 2011-12 with an energetic and enthusiastic group of 6th, 7th and 8th graders at our first meeting on Aug. 18. We “discovered” how to say “WELCOME!” in over a hundred languages and got to know other club members by guessing which language was which. We played international bingo (in Spanish, French and English) and some lucky players were awarded with noisemakers.
On Sept. 8, we had a wonderful gathering of student cooks who made chicken quesadillas, home-made salsa and some sweet cinnamon crocantes for dessert. Yummy good and great company!
Our October meeting was about how Halloween is celebrated throughout the world. We looked at the Celtic origins, as well as the legend of "Springy Jack". After discussing the Mexican Day of the Dead celebration, we made papel picado banners.
In November we each skimmed/read quickly library books that had international themes, then discussed them with other club members. We learned about our club shirts. We discussed our December field trip to the Heritage Residential Home for seniors and dinner at El Maguey.
In December we went to the senior center and did an awesome job of helping the folks get in the holiday spirit with our beautiful (?) singing! What a wonderful time we had, along with members of the Service Club. Later, we enjoyed some tasty Mexican food at El Maguey.
