Hello!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to each and every one of you! I just wanted to take a quick minute to thank you for your generous gifts and lovely cards. We are truly blessed in the Holy Infant community to have so many wonderful, generous, prayerful families. Enjoy time with family and friends, and celebrate this special time with Jesus.
I am so pleased to report that several of our submissions have been posted on the Weekly Reader website. Congratulations to Jack Gagan, Ryan Walsh, Andy Fritz, Samantha Heppermann, and Michael Owens, whose work was chosen by the READ magazine staff from those which we have sent in so far. "Write to the Future" authors, and 8th grade poets, your work has been mailed in to the back cover competition. I look forward to seeing more of your work posted online for all the world to read! Check the website and tell me if you see that any more of your classmates have been published.
Second quarter A.R. is due at 3 P.M. on 1/13, and the early incentive date is 1/6. (8th grade due dates hit a few days before the end of the quarter due to the need to prepare report cards for high schools.) Despite some problems with the A.R. system, each student checked his/her record on 12/4 now that the system has been fixed, and all data is correct and complete. The A.R. program is set up for each of you individually with points and reading ranges that suit your specific reading abilitiies and schedules. That is an awesome idea. Continue to strive for success in this area of your reading development and grade.
Knights of Columbus essay guidelines were given in class on 12/1. The topic, "strong families build strong communities," is one about which you should have many ideas. Your completed, typed, nearly ready for submission draft was due on Monday, 12/7. You have revised the graded essays and resubmitted them on Wednesday, 12/16. As emphasized in class, you were not to LOSE OR THROW AWAY YOUR GRADED DRAFTS. I have not read the final draft unless you resubmitted the graded draft. So one more time, here is what I needed on Wednesday:
Draft which was graded by me and was returned to you on Friday. Peer editing form stapled to the back of this draft. A clean copy of your cover sheet and essay stapled to the top of those two, so that I could comment on your revision effort and issue your second grade. A parent signature and date, indicating that this essay was edited and revised one more time at home. Separately, a second final essay and coversheet (yes, run two copies when you print your final draft), to be handed in at the same time, but not attached to the packet above, so that I can submit it to the Knights of Columbus in neat and tidy fashion.
UPDATE: I am shocked by how many of the essays came in missing some component. How could I grade your revision, if you did not give me one? I am sad to report that I had to record many zeroes on this assignment. When you receive your packet back on Monday, talk to me immediately if you have a zero.
We have begun the study of nonfiction. Please remember that I will be checking your notebooks on Monday 1/4 to see if you have completed the note taking assignment on which you worked in class before Christmas. Be sure that you have your notebook with you in class on Monday. Although nonfiction is not everyone's favorite, there are many really interesting biographies and autobiographies in our textbook, in the library, and in the A.R. system. For extra credit any time during third quarter, read a grade level biography or autobiography for A.R., take the test, call me over to show me, and recieve 10 bonus points.
Read, read, read! Will you meet the early incentive date?
Happy New Year!
Mrs. Gillian
