5th Grade Newsletter

Greetings everyone,

Thank you to everyone  that donated a book for our class. We received some excellent books that will help in our studies this year.

Mrs. Malone and I have sent home a form to reschedule conferences. On the form you may indicate which time is best for you on Saturday, Nov. 14. You may also request a phone conference instead of coming on Saturday or arrange a time during the week. We hope that this will accommodate everyone.

Please check my calendar for upcoming tests. I have scheduled the next math, science, and social studies tests.

We are starting number theory and fractions in math. It is crucial that your child knows his/her multiplication facts. This skill is very important and necessary in order to compute fractions. If your child needs extra practice, please assist them them with flashcards. I also have flashcard sites on my math links page.

In science we will study Processes That Change the Earth. Next week the students will start a group project that involves building a structure that should withstand an earthquake. It is a fun project that involves problem-solving and teamwork.

We are continuing our unit on early explorers this week. Students will be designing explorer trading cards in computer class. They will choose an explorer and research his life. Important facts about the explorer will be included on the back of the card. Everyone will continue working on their maps in class this week. I have seen some creative ideas and can't wait to see the end results.

Have an enjoyable week.
