Sixth Grade Math
Sixth Grade math focus on attaining an understanding and fluency with
fractions and decimals. Students will examine the fraction/decimal/percent
relationship to gain understanding of ratio, rate, and proportion. Spatial
reasoning will be deepened through the examination of basic geometric figures
and the use of benchmarks for measuring linear distances. Algebraic reasoning
will be introduced through the use of variables to write and evaluate
expressions, and to solve equations. Students will develop problem solving
strategies for solving word problems.
Seventh Grade Math
In seventh grade math, students will extend their understandings of addition,
subtraction, multiplication, and division, together with their properties, to
attain fluency with all rational numbers, including negative integers. Using
their understandings of proportionality, students will examine the
fraction/decimal/percent relationship which will be used to solve problems
involving percents. Useing variables to describe unknown quantities will be
introduced along with strategies for solving linear equations with one
variable. Students will develop and use formulas for areas and volumes of
geometric shapes. Theoretical and experimental probability will be explored,
as well as data analysis. Strategies for solving problems will be emphasized
throughout the year. A trip to Jr. Achievement's Finance Park is being planned
for the second semester. During this day, students can see the connection
between what they are experiencing in the classroom and a real life simulation.
Eighth Grade Math
Eighth grade math will focus on developing algebraic reasoning through the use
of variables, expressions, and linear equations. Examination of the slope of a
line as a constant rate of change will lead students to the understanding of
function with its graphical representations. Additional algebra topics include
operations with polynomials and factoring. Proportionality will be
investigated through ratios, rates, and percents, as well as through the
examination of geometric figures. Students will use descriptive statistics,
including mean, median, and range, to summarize and compare data sets.
Experimental and theoretical probability will be explores. Projects relating
to algebra and geometry will be assigned. Strategies for solving problems will
be emphasized throughout the year.
