God Project Assigned: August 16 or 17, 2011
            Due: September 13 or 14, 2011

GOAL: Create a visual image, which reflects your personal image or experience
of God.

This must be a project, which is new -- you may not use something that has
been previously made and/or designed for another assignment.

You may use drawings; collage; a combination of words and pictures; or other
forms of visual arts to express your "image" or understanding of God and the
way(s) you experience God. Please do not give me a poster filled only with
words. This is meant to be a visual experience. It is difficult to put the
experience of the God of our understanding into words. You have already done
this with the beginning essay assignments. Now find a visual way to express
your experience of God.
* These may reflect the people, places, things or times, which have brought
the experience of God into your life more clearly. Remember the concept of
"sacred moments" from Sophomore year.

This should be no smaller than an 8" by 11" piece of paper. I would prefer
poster size.
**If you choose to do something other than a poster-type project, such as a
mobile, slide show, video, life presentation, or something totally new, it
must be approved by me within the first week that the assignment is assigned.
This is to insure both of us that you have been given the maximum amount of
time to complete your project well.

* You may use your individual talents to express your experience of God, so if
you are a dancer and want to design a dance to express your experience, you
may do so. Just tell me before hand that this is what you want to do. You
may sculpt, paint, draw, or design something, which expresses your experience.
If you are a musician and can compose and perform your experience that will
work. If you are video wizard or have some other brilliant ideas bring them
to me for approval.

Everyone in the class will see your “God Project.” You do not need to write
anything about it for me. You must be able to explain it to me, privately.
The day this is due: ---------- I will give the class a reading and worksheet
assignment to do, while I meet with each student, individually, to listen to
her explanation of the her project.

***LATE PROJECTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED WITHOUT PENALTY:
Late assignments will go down one whole letter grade for each day that it is
late. No "A" will be given to a project that is late regardless of the
reason. The project is worth 20% of your final quarter grade.
*It is DUE: At the beginning of Class on ________.

IT IS CONSIDERED LATE ANYTIME AFTER THIS CLASS PERIOD.

Please inform me, if you need audio-visual equipment for your presentation so
arrangements can be made to get access to the necessary equipment. Remember
this is summer time and the Library is not open.

Guidelines for the News article Assignments.

You are to use the National Catholic Reporter and/or the St. Louis Review to
read and report on two articles for this summer's course. You should always
use a different week for each report and one should be from the National
Catholic Reporter and one should be from the St. Louis
Review (*the order does not matter). You should never have two articles from
the same week or from the same newspaper for any one week. There should be a
minimum of seven days between each date used for an article.

The purpose of this assignment is to keep you current with Catholic views on
current issues, so you should not be more than a week or two behind the
current week for the articles that you are reporting on.

These assignments are due each week refer to the dates on the syllabus.
  First Quarter: Second Quarter:
1st: September 28 or 29,2011 1st: October 27 or 28, 2011
2nd: October 6 or 7, 2011 2nd: November 17 or 18, 2011

These article reports are based on three things:

 (a) The basic information concerning the article:
     [1] The name of the Newspaper used;
     [2]the date of that newspaper;
     [3]the title of the article; the author (**note if no author is listed);
and [4] which article [article # 1., etc.] is this for you.
     [5] Your name,
     [6]the name of the course,
[7]the date the assignment is due,
and [8] your class period must also appear on the top of this assignment.

Each of these sections will be worth 4 points.

 (b) A complete summary of the content of the article.
If you don't understand it, choose one you do understand. This should be
a minimum of one paragraph in length. * Points will be deducted for poor
writing, misspellings, incorrect information and/or insufficient
    information.

The summary should clearly state what the issue is and what the author has
   to say about it.

 (c) Please follow the English guidelines that you have been taught. A
paragraph should consist of 3-6 well written sentences. This is the
minimum number of sentences to be used for each of the next two sections
-- the summary of the article and your response/reaction to the
information contained in the article. Section two is worth 33 points.

 (d) Your reaction/response to the article.
Points will be deducted for poor writing, misspellings, incorrect
information and/or insufficient information. You should understand
what you are talking about. You should make your point of view clear
and offer evidence to support your opinions. Section three=33 points.

Each section is worth 33 points =99 total.
Needless to say you should write in complete sentences and articulate your
ideas clearly. It should be legible and neat. If you’re unable to write
  neatly, please type it.

Please remember and apply William O'Malley's five steps to the process of
thinking:
	"1. Gather the data,
	 2. Sift the data to get the best,
	 3. Put the data into some kind of logical sequences so that you can
	 4. Draw a conclusion, and
	 5. Put that conclusion out to be critiqued." (62, Converting the
             Baptized)

Also remember O'Malley's description about opinions:

"You're opinion is only as good as the evidence that backs it up."
           (61)

**You may not use a report from any date earlier than the Week of
January 7, 2011 for third quarter's reports and not any earlier than March
11th 2011. All reports must be from the current quarter after this date.
Many of you may have access to the St. Louis Review and/or the National
Catholic Reporter at home. Please ask your family if you are not sure.

You may access the newspapers via the internet:

          http://www.natcath.org {for National Catholic Reporter} and

     http://www.stlouisreview.com {for The St. Louis Review}.

** Please list the complete date: the month, the day, and the year. No
report will be graded without the date of issue on the report.

Please read the following instructions very carefully. Ask Ms. D. Casias
Noonan for clarification if you do not understand these instructions:

The newspapers are in the Library (*check your Public Library and the
Internet). They are at the reserve desk in Nerinx's Library and may only be
used in the Library or checked out overnight. Be sure to ask for a specific
date. Unfortunately our library is closed during the summer.

The St. Louis Review and the National Catholic Reporter may be found in our
Nerinx Hall H.S. Library at the reserve desk , you might find the St. Louis
Review at your local public library, and the National Catholic Reporter might
be found on the Internet.

Please read the following instructions very carefully. Ask Ms. Casias Noonan
for clarification if you do not understand these instructions: You may not use
the news from the same week for more than one report. It will not be graded.
If you turn in a report from NCR August 16, 2011 for your first report, you
may not use the St. Louis Review 's August 16, 2011 for any other report
because the news for August 16, 2011 has already been used once.

Keep a record of the dates you use for each article in your theology folder
for this class. You may be asked to show the record of your articles to Ms.
D. Casias Noonan.

******You are to use the National Catholic Reporter [http://www.natcath.org]
and/or the St. Louis Review [http://www.stlouisreview.com ] to read and
report on two articles.

These are due at the beginning of the class on the due date.
If you are present for this class, late assignments are not accepted. You may
use your birthday coupon for one of these assignments.

You should never have two articles from the same week or from the same
newspaper for any one-week no matter what paper you are using.

The purpose of this assignment is to keep you current with Catholic views on
current issues, so you should not be more than a week or two behind the
current week for the articles that you are reporting on.

assistance pending clarification of circumstances surrounding killings of the
women.

December 6-9, 1980: Rogers-Bowdler Commission agrees to investigate the crime
in El Salvador.

December 17, 1980: Economic assistance resumes when Jose Napoleon Duarte is
named president.

Feb. 8, 1982: New investigation brings forth confessions of involvement in the
murders by five National Guardsmen. Imprisonment of guardsmen was first time
anyone was held responsible for murder in the civil war. (*Ursuline Sister
Dorothy Kazel, Martyred in El Salvador)

The four former guardsmen were convicted of murder in 1984, were sentenced to
30 years in prison and have twice been declared ineligible for the amnesty
that came at the war's end because their crime is classified as nonpolitical.
Luis Antonio Colindres Aleman, a sub-sergeant, was also found guilty, but
he is held in a prison away from the others.(* Why Three American Nuns were
Killed in El Salvador in 1980)

March of 1993: United Nations Report of the Truth Commission is published and
shows evidence that the arrest and execution had been planned and carried out
based on orders of a higher superior.

In 1993, a United Nations Truth commission report concluded that Col. Carlos
Eugenio Vides Casanova, the director of the National Guard in 1980, and Gen.
Jose Guillermo Garcia, the minister of defense at the time, had organized an
official cover-up. Nevertheless, both men have been granted residence in the
United States and now live in Florida. (* Why Three American Nuns were killed
in El Salvador in 1980)

March of 1998: Four guardsmen break silence and admit to a group of U.S.
human rights lawyers that they had killed the churchwomen, acting on orders
given by them by their superiors. (*Ursuline Sister Dorothy Kazel, Martyred in
El Salvador)

2 Killers of Nuns Freed From Salvador Prison
Luis Colindres and Jose Roberto Moreno Canjura, two former national guardsmen
convicted in rapes and murders of three American nuns and layworker in El
Salvador in 1980, are freed from prison after serving 17 years of 30-year
prison sentences
July 22, 1998

December 4-6, 1999: Solidaridad, a national gathering of all organizations
with missions ties to Central America, is sponsored by Religious Task Force on
Central America and held in Cleveland, Ohio.

May 13, 1999: Families of churchwomen file wrongful death lawsuit against
General Jose Guillermo Garcia and General Eugenio Vies Cassanova, then a
colonel and director of the National Guard. The generals live in Florida
after being granted resident visas in 1989.

Salvadoran Prelate Asks Release of Killers
Archbishop Fernando Saenz of San Salvador asks government of El Salvador to
pardon two former soldiers convicted of raping and killing three American nuns
and social worker in 1980; says they have demonstrated their repentance;
victims are Ita Ford, Maura Clark, Dorothy Kazel and Jean Donovan; their
families filed suit against former defense minister and director general of
National Guard; families think women were killed because officials suspected
they sympathized with leftist guerrillas
April 24, 2000

Oct. 24, 2000: Sister Dorothy Kazel was inducted into the Ohio Women’s Hall
of Fame.

Salvadoran General Admits He Knew of Abuses
By DAVID GONZALEZ
Gen Carlos Eugenio Vides Casanova, retired head of Salvadoran National Guard,
admits that he knew that his troops, five of whom were convicted in killings
of four American churchwomen in 1980, had been involved in torture and
killings of civilians when he was appointed to lead guard in 1979 but says he
did not have resources to root out wrongdoers; he and Gen Jose Guillermo
Garcia, who was defense minister, are co-defendants in federal wrongful-death
suit in West Palm Beach, Fla, brought by women’s families...
October 20, 2000

November 3, 2000: General Carlos Casanova and General Jose Garcia were
declared “not guilty” following a trial in West Palm Beach, Fla. The families
of the four churchwomen claimed the two Salvadoran generals, now living in
Florida, were ultimately responsible for the December 1980 abduction, rape,
and murders of the churchwomen. The pursuit of the truth continues.

December 2, 2000: On the 20th anniversary of the martyrdom of the four
churchwomen in El Salvador, the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland and the
Cleveland Diocesan Mission Office celebrated the Eucharist in the Cathedral of
St. John the Evangelist. The fifth Dorothy Kazel Alleluia Award was also
conferred.
