Marble Exercise for Relating Chapter One
Name:_________________________ Date:____________________ Period:______
Those who parented us somehow give us the basic “set of marbles” with which we
have set out to play “the game of life”: some large, and others small; some
round and smooth and beautifully colored, and others with slight
discolorations or imperfections. These earliest childhood experiences in
relating also taught us the rules by which we were to pay the game. But the
strategies were ours.

#13. ME BOXES: One of the great traditions of Freshman Retreat is to have
each
student select a box of their choosing and decorate the outside of it with
pictures, art, words, symbols, etc. that reflect who they are or what they are
like. The outside of this box should reflect what others probably ALREADY
know about them. On the inside of the box are to be placed 2-3 symbols,
words, pictures, etc. that represent what is mostly UNKNOWN about themselves –
perhaps a fear, hope, dream, conviction, or struggle. It would be helpful to
suggest to your freshman that even the average shoebox is often too large and
unwieldy (difficult to transport), and recommend they choose a small shoebox
(or something smaller) for this activity.

Please have each student put her name on the bottom of the box. This activity
will help them prepare for the retreat so please emphasize the significance of
putting some time and thought into it. Students should have the boxes
completed and brought to school by Thursday, April 7th. If we could also try
to locate 7 large boxes (one for each section) that will hold and help move
all these Me Boxes to the retreat site, let’s keep our eyes open for those.
