PRIMARY K-2
Kindergarten
Kindergarten students will be doing a lot of
hands-on-activities and learning about themselves and their world using line,
form, shape, color and texture. Students will continue to develop their
painting skills by making a still life with flowers. They will learn
about different subjects in art and make art inspired by Piet Mondrian.
Kindergarten students will experience clay and create a "pitch-pot"
ladybug.
1st Grade
First Graders will create art based on abstract artists
Wassily Kandinsky and Georgia O'Keeffe. Students will continue to
increase their drawing and painting skills and create a turtle from clay.
2nd Grade
Second Graders
will continue to increase there painting and cutting skills while creating a
sunset cross. They will review warm and cool colors in art and how they
are used while comparing and contrasting two works of art.
INTERMEDIATE 3-5
3rd Grade
Third graders will respond to a variety of art works and
especially those of Monet, Van Gogh and Cezanne. The students will create a
watercolor painting similar to Monet’s “water lilies”.
Students will learn about Impressionism and how it changed the world of art.
Students will create clay water lilies as well. Students will compare and
contrast impressionism to post-impression through hands-on artwork.
4th Grade
Fourth
graders will be working with the elements of design: line, shape,
form, texture, value, and color. They will continue to
practice and strengthen their drawing skills both in and out of class.
They will design a "Coat of Arms" using symbols based on the artwork
seen at the art museum. The forth grade will learn about the Oaxaca
culture and create a sculpture in that style.
5th Grade
Fifth graders will focus on works of Paul Klee and
Picasso. Students will study color mixing by painting and recording the
results in their sketchbooks. The 5th grade will create a Picasso
portrait and study cubism. Students will also create a clay bird’s nest
and study ceramic techniques.
MIDDLE SCHOOL ART 6-8
6th Grade
Sixth Graders
will learn about artists Henri Matisse through his paintings and paper cutouts.
The students will create art based on his work. The sixth grade will focus
on texture and use metal toiling to study actual texture. Students will be able to identify
implied texture in art.
7th Grade
Seventh Graders are working with the principles of
organization: balance, harmony, repetition, pattern, unity, emphasis, and
contrast as they create their patterned scratch art. The students will
study the chemistry of clay and how it's used in art. Students will
create their own coil pot.
8th Grade
Eighth Graders will be working with clay and designing
crosses. Students will study various styles of crosses and review
catholic symbolism. Students will reflect on their time at SGM by
creating a "Memory Lane" drawing.
