How much homework can I expect?
Mr. Ryan assigns homework almost nightly. I try to keep the
assignments short (about 20-30 minutes). Homework usually
involves 20-30 minutes of reading, taking notes over assigned
reading, and answering review questions over the day's lesson.
Mr. Ryan will show you acceptable methods for completion of your
assignments.
How often do we take tests?
Mr. Ryan tries to assign test about every 3 weeks, or whenever we
finish a chapter. Chapters are generally broken up into four
sections.
How often do we do labs?
Mr. Ryan strives to provide a "hands-on" activity almost daily.
Some lab work is very formal where you will have a lab packet to
complete. Some labs simply require experimentation and
communication of data with classmates.
Is the science fair mandatory?
Yes. Participating in the St. Gerard Majella Science Fair is
mandatory for seventh graders and will be counted toward your
grade.
Unlike in previous grades, the entire science curriculum will not
be devoted to the science fair. Mr. Ryan will provide some class
time for this, but you are expected to complete the vast majority
of the project outside of class. Mr. Ryan will also collect certain pieces of your science fair project for a grade.
What are blue slips?
Blue slips are earned if a student commits an infraction of our
school rules. Blue slips are considered a warning, and can be
issued without previous warning of a behavior at Mr. Ryan's
discretion. The middle school team meets regularly to discuss
student issues and to be consistant with this policy.
What if I am absent?
Everyone should have a homework partner. I also update my
homework section of the web page daily. Students have 3 school
days to turn in an assignment after an absence. If more time is
needed, please have your parent contact me.
