Sunrise Student Council Constitution



Article I. NAME



The name of this organization shall be the Sunrise Student Council, DeSoto, Missouri



Article II. PURPOSE



The purpose of this organization shall be:

A. To develop skills in representative government.

B. To represent the student body of the school.

C. To provide orderly direction of school activities.

D. To promote the general welfare of the school.



Article III. MEMBERSHIP



Section 1. Becoming a Member

A. To be a member of Sunrise Student Council, a student in grade 6, 7, or 8 must
complete a representatives form which three teachers, five classmates, and the students
parents have signed. Students must answer questions stating their reasons for wanting to be a
member and pledge to be a responsible Sunrise Student Council Representative.

B. Having completed the above requirements, students will have their names placed
on the ballot for their homeroom. Each class will elect three representatives.



Section 2. Duties of Sunrise Student Council Members:

A. Attend all meetings of the council and serve on appropriate committees.

B. Participate actively in all functions undertaken by the council.

C. Fairly and conscientiously represent Sunrise School and its students at all
times.



Section 3. Elections

General elections for Sunrise Student Council will be held in the fall of each
school year. Those students elected will be the Sunrise Student Council for that school year.



Article IV. OFFICERS



Section 1.

The officers of this organization shall be the president, vice-president, and the
secretary.



Section 2. Duties of Officers

A. The presidents duties shall be:

1. To preside at council meetings.

2. To call special meetings.

3. To appoint committees.

4. To represent the council on public occasions.

5. To be a spokesperson for the student body.



B. The vice-presidents duties shall be to perform the duties of the president in
his/her absence.



C. The secretarys duties shall be:

1. To keep the minutes of all meetings.

2. To handle all official correspondence.

3. To maintain an attendance record.

4. To keep a file of all Sunrise Student Council correspondence.

5. To be responsible for relaying minutes to the student body.



Article V. ELECTION OF OFFICERS



Section 1. All officers of the Sunrise Student Council shall be elected by the
council themselves during their first regular meeting, by majority vote.



Article VI. REMOVAL FROM COUNCIL

Section 1. Reasons for removal from office:

A. Having two unexcused absences from meetings or mandatory activities.

B. For not carrying out their duties as an officer or representative.

C. For ALL types of suspension.

D. If any grade falls below a C- and remains at that after a period of four weeks
of probation.

E. If the students conduct grade falls below a B- and remains at that after a
period of two weeks of probation.



Article VII. MEETINGS



Section 1. The council shall meet at least once a month after school, with time
and place to be designated by the advisor.



Section 2. Special meetings of the council may be called by the president and the
advisor.



Section 3. A quorum shall consist of a majority of the members of the council.



Article VII. POWERS



All powers of the Sunrise Student council are delegated to it by the school
administration. Therefore the principal has the right to veto any act of the council
or to revoke any powers held by the council. Any veto must be written.



Article IX. AMENDMENTS



Section 1. A majority of council members may propose amendments to the constitution.



Section 2. A two-thirds vote of the entire student council is required for passage
of a constitutional amendment.



Article X. PARLIAMENTARY AUTHORITY



In all matters not specifically expressed in this constitution the parliamentary
authority shall be ROBERTS RULES OF ORDER REVISED.
