GRADE INFORMATION:

I will be taking grades in the following areas:

PHONICS

Tests – I will be taking grades on any test that is administered in the following areas:

  • Letter Recognition
  • Letter Sounds Identification
  • Beginning Sounds Identification
  • Middle Sounds Identification
  • Ending Sounds Identification
  • Sight-Word / High Frequency Word Identification

Homework – I will not be taking grades on any homework that is done or any homework that is sent home.  The reason for this is because grades need to be based on what the child knows, and that is very hard to determine how much help is given when work is sent home.  School work that is done in the classroom, will be done with my help or with a partner, again which is hard to determine how much the child knows.  This type of Work is given as practice and therefore will not require a grade.

Some work that I give will be independent work that students will need to do without my help.  These pieces of work will be looked over by me.  I will mark them with a star or a few words regarding what your child may need practice on at home.  Please look at these and reinforce what they may need help on at home.

READING

Tests – Students will not receive a grade for their reading ability; however their Reading levels will be tested and monitored throughout the year.

Homework – Each Monday (or the beginning of each Reading First Week) I will be sending home paper copy books.  Students will need to take these books home, and read them with an adult or older child.  You do NOT need to sign and return books this year unless instructed to do so. I would like for your child to keep these books, and reread them to improve their reading fluency.

HANDWRITING

Tests – I will be administering quarterly tests on handwriting, using proper technique, proper use of lines, and neatness.  I believe at this point there is not a permanent record grade for handwriting; however I will be giving a grade to simply inform you how your child is doing, and if they need some practice.  Again this is not a grade that goes in their permanent record.

Homework – Handwriting worksheets are done in class most days. I am not going to give grades on daily handwriting practice.  However please look over these papers that are sent home to determine if your child needs extra practice at home.

MATH

Tests – The following areas will be tested quarterly

  • Counting (by the end of the year students should count to 100)
  • Recognizing numbers to 31
  • Recognizing Shapes (Circle, Triangle, Square, Rectangle, Oval, and Diamond)
  • Drawing Shapes (Circle, Triangle, Square, Rectangle, Oval, and Diamond)
  • Making patterns (ABA, ABB, AAB, ABC)

Tests – Students will be given a test after each unit in our Math Curriculum.  A letter grade and percent will be given for these tests.  I will send home each test after they are graded so you can go over with your child what they missed in a constructive manner.

Homework – I do not take a grade on Math homework...I have found that your child's true math ability is revealed in test scores.  At this grade level homework is used to introduce and practice a skill learned.  Homework will be looked over by me and sent home so that you can look over it as well and help your child in any areas they may be having problems in.

* Even though I do not take a letter grade on homework please review any problems they may have missed on the homework assignment.  This is very important in correcting any mistakes, or misunderstanding your child may have had over the assignment.
