My name is Lyn Williams. I am helping this year with our new Reading
First reading program as a Reading Coach / Intervention teacher. I will be
working with teachers and students in third through fifth grade. This
reading program is backed up by scientific research and has proven to be
effective. In order to help make this program more beneficial for your
child, we need your continued involvement and support at home. I’m looking
forward to working with your children and being a part of their success.
I have taught here at Sunrise since 1990. I have worked as a fourth and
a fifth grade classroom teacher for twelve years before I became a
specialized reading teacher. I’ve worked as a Reading Recovery teacher as
well as with small literacy groups. Our goal is to work with the students on
effective reading and writing strategies in order that they will become
strong independent readers and writers.
Many times parents ask, “How do I get my kids to read?” My advice to
them is to find something that is of interest to them, whether it be animals,
sports, or video games. There are books out there on every subject. Reading
is all around us, street signs, cereal boxes, directions, etc. If you put it
out in front of them, chances are they’ll read it. Make reading motivating
and not a chore. Demonstrate that reading can be fun and entertaining.
Children often model their parents, whether we like it or not. Kids grow up
fast. Treasure them while you have them and make reading a part of your
family time.
