Sight WordsTip for over the summer: If your child cannot spell the word, they may need to review it over the Summer. They may be able to read the word but not spell it. If this is the case and your child does not practice it, then their is a possibility it may be forgotten. Out of sight out of mind is what I always say. Therefore, just review weekly to maintain what they know. Reading and flashcards can help your child review their sight words. Eventually with more review and practice they will soon be able to spell it and read it. A child really has put a sight word in long-term memory when they start using it in their own writing! :) The hardest words from our list are the tricky "w" words: went, with, was, what. Have a great Summer!
***It is extremely important for your child to learn sight words. Sight words are the words most frequently used in a text. Sight words make up about 70% of the text and by knowing these words your child can spend more time focusing on sounding out longer, harder words. *** Here is a list of our words: instantwords.ppt
Throughout the school year, your child will learn about 3-4 sight words a week. Please encourage and help your child to learn their words for the week. Thank you.
If your child can read all of the words on the kindergarten list, then we will start learning the first grade word list. Your child will still, however, practice spelling the words on the kindergarten list. |
