Monday, Sept. 1st: Labor Day—No school
Tuesday, Sept. 2nd: Bell-Ringer on pronoun/antecedent agreement, Discuss Bell-Ringer, (Quiz on pronoun/antecedent agreement Friday), Take up Beowulf vocabulary, Give test on Beowulf (moved from last Friday to today)
Homework: None
Wednesday, Sept.3rd:Bell-Ringer, Discuss Bell-Ringer, Return Anglo-Saxon Notes and Subject/Verb Agreement quizzes and go over them, Read an excerpt from John Gardner’s Grendel, Discuss how the author’s tone, vocabulary, point of view, use of figurative language, etc. in Beowulf and Grendel affect the reader, Give notes on the physical characteristics of Anglo-Saxon poetry
Homework: Quickwrite on p. 55
Thursday, Sept. 4th: Bell-Ringer, Discuss Bell-Ringer, Check and discuss homework, Discuss elegy, kennings, and tone of speaker, Read “The Seafarer” aloud in class—as we read, focus on the 5 W’s: Who the main character is, what the poem is about, where and when it takes place, and why the speaker returns to the sea, Give students information about the collage that is due Monday, There will be a quiz on “The Seafarer” Tuesday
Homework: 1.) Study for quiz on Pronoun/Antecedent Quiz, 2.) Begin working on collage
Friday, Sept.5th: Bell-Ringer, Discuss Bell-Ringer, Give quiz on Pronoun/Antecedent Agreement, Classwork: (Creative Writing)—“You are a ‘seafarer.’” Create a “Seafarer” poem, opening with the line “This tale is true, and mine.” [The students will write about their own aspirations, hopes, joys, and disillusionments. They must incorporate alliteration and kennings in their poems, in true Anglo-Saxon style.]
Homework: Finish working on collage (due Monday)
Monday, Sept. 8th: Bell-Ringer, Discuss Bell-Ringer, Review “The Seafarer,” Present Collages
Homework: Study for quiz on “The Seafarer”
Tuesday, Sept. 9th: Bell-Ringer, Discuss Bell-Ringer, Give quiz on “The Seafarer,” There will be a major test on the Anglo-Saxon Period (Notes, Beowulf, and “The Seafarer”) Friday and Monday—The test will be given in two parts, Give students a list of possible discussion questions, Return and go over graded quizzes
Homework: Begin studying for the Anglo-Saxon test (Discussion questions)
Wed., Sept. 10th: Bell-Ringer, Discuss Bell-Ringer, Group work: Students will be divided into groups and work on review questions for the Anglo-Saxon test
Homework: Study for Anglo-Saxon test
Thursday, Sept. 11th: Bell-Ringer, Discuss Bell-Ringer, Review for Anglo-Saxon test: Groups will present their questions and answers to the class as a means of review
Homework: Study for Part I of Anglo-Saxon test (objective part)
Friday, Sept. 12th: Bell-Ringer, Discuss Bell-Ringer, Give Part I of the Anglo-Saxon Test
Homework: Study for Part II of Anglo-Saxon test (discussion part)
