US SYLLABUS

                        2009 - SECOND SEMESTER UNITED STATES HISTORY
REMEMBER - ALL PLANS MAY BE OFF A DAY EITHER WAY BECAUSE OF DISCUSSION

JAN 6: TUESDAY - chapter 12
Review semester tests and make corrections.  Brewer will point out those that 
the students really need to watch for on the state test.  Brewer will hand 
out unit summary paragraphs and students will place those in their folders 
behind the correct divider.  Classes will fill in the WWI tree map reviewing 
the material learned before the break about WWI.  Class will discuss various 
political cartoons about the leaders during the war.  Class will complete 
activity on how the war was fought (using pictures).  Students will begin 
working on trench packet.
HW - BRING 2 PACKS OF TABS FOR YOUR FOLDER - DUE BY THURSDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JAN 7:  WEDNESDAY - chapter 12
Class will complete trench packet and turn in.  We will look at and discuss 
the pros/cons of fighting in a trench.  Class will complete worksheet fill-in 
outlining events the U.S. was involved in after 1917.

JAN 8:  THURSDAY - chapter 12
Class will complete 'women in the war effort' worksheet and turn in. 
Complete battle map and write descriptions of each.  Draw details on the map 
of the following:  Battle of Amien, Second battle of the Marne, Chateau-
Thierry, Meuse-Argome offense.  HW - QUIZ

JAN 12:  MONDAY - chapter 12
Students will complete U.S. contribution map, war results worksheet, and free 
speech worksheet.  Class will discuss the Espionage/Sedition Act.  Students 
will compare/contrast important numbers of the war (casualities, soldiers, 
etc.).

Students will anyalize the differences between a 1914 and 1918 map of 
Europe.  We will compare this to the information we studied for results of 
the war.  Answer several questions from the book.

answer several WWI questions for grade.  Begin political cartoon drawing 
about WWI.

turn in political cartoon about WWI.  Begin discussing 1920s -chapter 13&14.

WATCH inauguration.   

WEDNESDAY - JAN 21:
finish political cartoon

THURSDAY - JAN 22:
begin chapters 13, 14 on the 1920s.  class will participate in general 
discussion of the atmosphere of the time.  Listen to songs, read poems, make 
some generalizations about the 1920s.

FRIDAY - JAN 23:
complete notes on the red scare, flappers, and the mass media in the 1920s.

MONDAY - JAN 26:
COMPLETE notes on labor strikes, 'buying on credit, labor strikes, and the 
demand for electricity' in the 1920s.  read poem, listen to some music.

TUESDAY - JAN 27:
COMPLETE notes on ford model t and immigration in the 1920s.  complete quiz.  
read poem, look at pictures.

WEDNESDAY - JAN 28:
COMPLETE notes on movement, crime, and black v. white in the 1920s.  Complete 
various worksheets adding to the information learned.

THURSDAY - JAN 29:
complete notes on religion, voting, presidents, and isolationism in the 1920s.

FRIDAY - JAN 30:
Dicuss several worksheets on the material studied.  Complete review paragraph 
fill in.  Get instructions on 1920s project.

WEDNESDAY – FEB. 4: START CHAPTER 15 - DEPRESSION
PICK A COLOR TO DESCRIBE THE 1920S AND write a paragraph about it.  
Complete the paragraph fill class started on Friday.  

THURSDAY – FEB.  5:  PROGRESS REPORTS
complete the double bubble chart comparing life during WWI and life during 
the 1920s.  Complete a chart outlining the positive and negative aspects of 
the 1920s economy.  Start completing the attached paragraph fill in using the 
book.  

FRIDAY – FEB. 6:  EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENT DUE WEDNESDAY
Completeda photo analysis on one of the pictures about the Depression.   
Also, class will discuss the stock market. Class will finish the paragraph 
fill in we started on Thursday.  

MONDAY - FEB.  9:  EXTRA CREDIT MOVIE NIGHT AT 5:45 AT CHS
Class will complete quiz on the economy of the late 1920s.  Class will create 
a time line of events that led to the stock market crash.  Class will look at 
chart on what was happening to stocks the day the market crashed.  Class will 
look at discuss poltical cartoon. Class will participate in a occupation 
game.  Class will complete bubble chart on causes of the Great Depression.  

TUESDAY - FEB.  10
Complete 'what happens when' chart about what happened to businesses after 
the market crashed.  Look at money and bank closing overheads.  Complete 
harships worksheet on how people survived the depression.  Complete 
unemployment worksheet and turn in.  EXTRA CREDIT DUE TOMORROW

WEDNESDAY - FEB. 11
Class will complete a review of economy and harships for a grade.  
Compare 'what a wonderful world' and 'brother can you spare a dime' songs.  
Begin discussion on farmers.  Complete a list about what was going on with 
the farmers in the West.  

THURSDAY - FEB. 12
Complete 'formulating historial questions.'  Read a letter from a dust bowl 
survivor.  Complete 'how to get out' tree map.  

FRIDAY - FEB.  13
Read 'Hard times in oklahoma' and answer questions.  Create a chart about the 
things Hoover did to try to get out of the Depression.  Read and discuss a 
description of FDR.  

MONDAY - FEB.  16:
Read opinions of Hoover and Roosevelt about each other.  Complete comparison 
clip art of Hoover and FDR.  


TUESDAY - FEB.  17:
Complete worksheet on Hoover's ideas about government.  
Read FDR's inaugural address and highlight his promises.  Complete clip art 
notes about FDR and his plans for the country.  Compare the nomination songs 
of Hoover and FDR and the picture on pg. 524 in 
book.

9 weeks tests
begin cold war unit - chapters 19, 20, section 3 of chapter 22, and 24.  
These units cover the entirety of the cold war, including the conflict in 
Korea and Vietnam.  
HW - bring an empty, CLEAN small soup can to class by Thursday.

TUESDAY - MARCH 10:
students will begin by completing questions from section 1, chapter 19 in 
class.  this will give us an overview of the unit. Students will read a story 
about Stalin, giving an illustration of what communism is.

WENDESDAY/THURSDAY/FRIDAY: (on the days not taking the 9 weeks test)
class will discuss the 'mood' of the 1950s - culture, family life, music, 
etc.  Class will complete quiz on the mood of the 1950s.  Students will 
listen to elvis and complete a bubble chart on the 
economy of the 1950s. Students will complete a 'motives' sheet for the 
actions of US and Russia during the cold war, look at Hi and Louis cartoon 
about the cold war.  Class will complete 'a former ally becomes an enemy' 
worksheet for a grade.

MONDAY - MARCH 23:
REVIEW information from before the break (
Class will discuss and complete time line of key events at the start of the 
cold war.
Complete ABCs of cold war
participate in domino activity, and complete questions on the 
hysteria of the time period (red scare, McCarthyism, etc.)
 

TUESDAY- MARCH 24:
Class will participate in CANtainment project on containment. 
Class will discuss the effects of the cold war on the middle east and in 
central america.  


TUESDAY - MARCH 24:
Students will complete the Korea and Vietnam wars packet.  

WEDNESDAY - MONDAY MARCH 25-30:
Discussion of information in packet.  Class will listen to song by Crosby, 
Nash, and Young on the protest at Kent State
HW - open packet quiz MONDAY on information in packet

TUESDAY - MARCH 31:
COMPLETION of cold paragraph fill in
discussion and notes on presidents Truman and Eisenhower
EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY:
paragraph writing on 2 topics:  1.  US won the war in Vietnam, 2.  US did not 
win the war in Vietnam.  Each student will write one paragraph defending each 
of the statements.  MUST BE TRYPED.  DUE FRIDAY, APRIL 3

WEDNESDAY - APRIL 1:
results of cold war, 75 things everyone needs to know about cold war review.  

THURSDAY - APRIL 2:
BEGIN CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT
discuss pictures, important people, events, legislation, etc. of the movement

FRIDAY - APRIL 3:
continue civil rights movement

MONDAY - APRIL 6:
look at civil rights pictures, finish discussion

TUESDAY - APRIL 7:
dicussion and information on the 4 other movements of the time, BEGIN to work 
on information of the last 10 presidents.
