4th Term Lesson Plans
March 23-May 22
WEEK OF MARCH 23-27
MONDAY-in class reading of the introduction to "Realism and The Frontier."
Students are to highlight important facts in the paragraphs as they read. We
will use these facts in learning how to outline material for use in research
papers.
TUESDAY/Wednesday- We will outline together from handout and overhead:
handout of a blank outline will be given to students and together we will
practice outlineing read matererial from the introduction.
THURSDAY-discussion of introduction material - (facts that were outlined)/
FRIDAY-read "The Outcasts of Poker Flat" this can be found in both
introduction packet and answer questions 1-10 for Monday
WEEK OF MARCH 30-APRIL 3
MONDAY-handout of vocab. 7 - discussion of "The Outcasts of Poker Flat" -
discussions will center around cultural attitudes of the characters used in
the story. HOmework: read from the same handout - "The Story of an Hour",
answer questions 1-11.
TUESDAY - discussions of "Story of an Hour" will center around irony of
situation. Homework: read Jack London's " To Build a Fire" found in the
reading textbook, pg. 496-509. Answer questions 1-6.
WEDNESDAY - discuss "To Build a Fire" -discussions will center around
foreshadowing, naturalism, and cause and effect.
Homework: read; Willa Cather's " A Wagner Matinee" This is a hand-out and
questions answered 1-9.
THURSDAY - class discussions from " A Wagner Matinee" will center around
characterization of Aunt Georgianna.Homework: " A Pair of Silk Stockings" on
page 436-445 - - -answer questions 1-4 on page 445.
FRIDAY=- homwork discussions from "A Pair of Silk Stockings" will center
around symbolism, character, paradox and dialogue.
-review for test from this unit. Test will be scheduled for next
Tuesday.
--handout of vocabulary units 7-8-and 9. Due next Wednesday.
WEEK OF APRIL 6-10
MONDAY -Catch-up day for last minute questions and homework questions/answers
TUESDAY -Realism and The Frontier Unit Test
WEDNESDAY -handouts given today for Vocabulary unit 7-9. We will work in
class today on unit 7 and this will actually be due on Tuesday of next week .
Handouts/Information for Term papers given today: the book The Great Gatsby
given in class today. Chapts. 1-4 due Monday upon return from Easter Break.
THURSDAY - in the library: Mrs. Gariga, the librarian will be demonstrating
for us how to use "Magnolia" in our term papers. Students should have one
article for The Great Gatsby due on Monday (can be biographical or a
critical reading)

WEEK OF APRIL 13-17
MONDAY-Term paper materials due in class(notecards, envelopes,& article) -
chapts. 1-4
of The Great Gatsby is to be finished by today. We will be working on Topic
Cards today in class.
TUESDAY- discussion of chapts. 1-4 today- - Chapts. 1-9 due next Monday-
WEDNESDAY-vocab. 7 due today in class-we will review answers for homework and
quiz on 7 will be on Friday-
We will start working on Bibliography cards in clas today
THURSDAY- in class work on Bibliography cards
FRIDAY-vocab. quiz for chapt. 7 today - after test - reading and working on
Bibliography cards.
WEEK OF APRIL 20-24
MONDAY- work on bibliography cards in class
TUESDAY-10 bibliography cards due at the beginning of class.-
-The Great Gatsby is due finished - we will be discussing the rest of
the book today in class.(i.e.characters, details, events)
Test on the book is Friday
WEDNESDAY - Finish any discussions from Tuesday's book review of
The Great Gatsby
reading and working on annotated bibliography cards
THURSDAY- reading and working on annotated bibliography cards - all 10 are
due on Friday at the beginning of class.
FRIDAY-10 annotated bibliography cards due: test on The Great Gatsby
WEEK OF APRIL 27-MAY 1
MONDAY - ONE MORE DAY!! Students have until the beginning of their class
period to turn in annotated cards that were due Friday.
The Outline - today we are learning how to make our "working outlines" for
our paper that we are writing. This should be finished by the time the
student returns to class on Tuesday.
TUESDAY-outline proofs - I will be checing outlines today in class after
teaching how to make note-cards. Students will have 25 notecards due next
Monday.
WEDNESDAY-Friday - working on notecards while in class. 25 cards are due on
Monday, May 4.
Vocab. 8 homework check today
FRIDAY-vocab. quiz 8 today: after quiz, work on notecards
WEEK OF MAY 4
**** we did not test on vocabulary last week - students are working so hard
on these term papers, I did not break the pace for vocabulary.
MONDAY - we are working on Introductory Paragraphs today in class - those I
have already checked on Friday may continue working on the complete rough
draft.
TUESDAY-Thursday - working on the rough drafts in class - students are
writing and I am proofing and helping as they write. Rough drafts are to be
turned in on Friday - typed - black ink-double spaced - MLS format.
(examples are in their packets!)
FRIDAY - ROUGH DRAFTS ARE DUE!!!
WEEK OF MAY 11 - I will hand back rough drafts for corrections - FINAL DRAFT
IS DUE ON WEDNESDAY OF THIS WEEK!!!
THE REST OF THIS WEEK WILL BE IN REVIEW FOR FINAL SEMESTER EXAMS - I will
hand back old tests for use in studying. These tests can not be taken from
the room, however, information can be copied while in class. The exam will
cover the following units: The Great Gatsby, Realism, The Fireside Poets, and
Romanticism. We have been so focused on our term papers, we have not broken
time to do our vocabulary, so I will not test on vocabulary from Sadlier
Oxford, but will test on literary terms that are related with our literary
units.
