WHITE HOUSE HOPEFULS TURN UP THE HUMOR (USA Today)
Click this link to access an article (with links) which details
how the presidential candidates are using humor in their
campaigns.
As always, you may copy and save this into a word processor and
simply type in your responses in a different color or highlight
them in color. Then save in RICH TEXT format, attach, and zip
them back through the ether to me.
1. Identify the special risk candidates take when they choose to
use humor.
2. "Humor is the great underutilized strategic tool," says Mark
Katz, who runs The Sound Bite Institute, a creative think tank.
WHY?
3. What is the safest and most effective political joke
technique?
4. Examples of candidates's effective use of humor:
A. For what does Democrat Hillary Clinton pray?
B. Name two higher powers Democrat Barak Obama consults for
guidance?
5. It's even better when a candidate's spouse uses humor
effectively. As Obama's joke indicates, it's often actually
advantageous for male candidates to appear a little bit hen-
pecked. In fact, having your wife cut you down to size often
scores even bigger points than self-deprecation.
A. Cite an example of Republican Mitt Romney's wife Ann
zapping him with just such a zinger.
B. Why does this technique work? (Think demography here!)
6. Smart candidates often use humor to neutralize personal
problems (HARDBALL translation: "Hang a lantern on your
problem.") Jill Lawrence lists several classic examples. Which
is your favorite?
7. Humor works for those in office, as well. In the videotape
shown at the 2004 White House Correspondents' Dinner, what was
President Bush looking for under the furniture in the Oval Office?
8. SKIP the video of Hillary Clinton singing the SSB. (Trust
me. It's painful.) Check out the Thompson video, though. When
undeclared Republican hopeful Fred Thompson criticized Michael
Moore's new movie SICKO, Moore challenged him to a debate.
Thompson's wife Jeri advised him to go with a You-Tubed
response. How does Thompson use humor as an offensive weapon
in this ad?
9. How did Republican Mike Huckabee turn a joke into a $40,000
fundraiser?
10. RELAX! This one's easy. Poll your parents to see what they
think about candidates and the use of humor in campaigns.

BEN FRANKLIN'S "RULES BY WHICH A GREAT EMPIRE MAY BE REDUCED TO A
SMALL ONE" : Modern pols aren't the first to use humor to get
the point across. Franklin's biting satire, which first appeared
in the PUBLIC ADVERTISER, a London newspaper in 1773, is in the
tradition of Swift's "Modest Proposal."
