Will a grade be taken for AR this year?

No. AR will not count as an academic grade this year. However, in
order for the children to meet their goals, they have to average
80% correct on their tests, as well as have a certain number of
points.

Can my child read all .5 pt books to reach his goal?

Your student accumulates points for each test that he/she passes.
The student needs to accrue a certain number of points based on
his/her color. On pink dot and up, a chapter book must also be
read each 3-week period to meet the goal. If a student reads all
picture books on colors pink and up, the goal will not be met
regardless of points.

How many times a week does my child have the opportunity to check out?

Each class has the opportunity to come to the library every day.
They come on their scheduled library day, and then may come
Monday through Friday in the afteroons.

How many books may my child check out at a time?

Each student may have two books at a time.

Will my 3rd grader be able to read all the way to black dot this year?

Once a child is reading two color dot grade levels above his/her
actual grade, it is the student's option to stay on or just below
that color. They are not required to continue on 3 grade levels
up unless they and their parents want to.

Can my student read and test on only one color?

The student was assigned his "color" based on past reading
performance on the STAR test - a reading level assessment test,
and past performance on AR tests. It is good for them to practice
on a level that challenges them, but is not too difficult. They
may read any book they want, but only test on their level.

How many points is each book worth?

The longer the book, the more points it is worth. All of the
picture books are worth 1/2 point. The short chapter books are
worth 1 point, and the points go up with the length of the book.

Why should my 3rd grader read chapter books?

It is good for students to pick the books they like, and read
what they enjoy. So they may read several 1/2 points for
enjoyment. To change colors and to reach their goal, however, the
student must complete some chapter books in their color. Chapter
books build reading comprehension and build vocabulary. On pink
dot and up, a chapter book is required each three weeks to meet
AR goals.

How does my student meet their Accelerated Reader goal?

The student needs to meet three objectives to reach their goal:
A student must achieve a certain number of points based on their
reading level.
Second graders and "up" need to average 80% correct on tests.
On Pink dot "up", they must have a chapter book (at least 1
point) every three week goal period.

What if my student has read several books on a color, but has not made passing grades on most?

The teacher, librarian, or parent can and should suggest working one level lower if a student consistently is not successful on a color. The best thing about AR is that each student can practice right where they are. And constant failure is discouraging.
