What speech and language skills are needed to do well in school? Ability to: 1.Use most speech sounds correctly (articulation); 2.understand a variety of words (vocabulary) 3.speak in complete sentences 4.answer questions 5.ask questions 6.attend to speaker and follow directions 7.use correct grammar 8.identify alphabet letters by name 9.associate the correct sound with each alphabet letter Does my child need all these skills to start school? No. The skills listed in answer #1 continue to develop in complexity and difficulty as a child grows and learns. How can I help my child's speech/language skills to develop? Read to your child. Talk to your child. Talk to your child. Talk to your child! Provide a language rich environment which includes limiting the amount of time spent watching television or playing electronic games. Give your child the best chance to succeed by reading to your child. Once your child begins to read have him/her read out loud to you and then discuss what has been read. |
