How does the attendance policy work?
At 3 or more unexcused absences:
The teacher will send a letter home to the parent making them aware
of their childs unexcused absences. This letter will ask the parent to
contact the teacher to discuss the unexcused absences and solutions to
eliminate the problem. If there is a problem that the school social worker
could assist the family with the teacher will contact the school social
worker.
At 6 or more unexcused absences:
The school social worker will contact the teacher to determine if the
teacher has spoken with the parent, if any solutions were discussed, and if
the teacher is aware of any other problems the family may be experiencing.
An attendance letter will be sent home signed by the school social worker
and principal. Home visits will be made if necessary.
At ten or more unexcused absences:
A letter will be mailed signed by the principal, and the school social
worker will be notified. The principal will review the efforts made by the
teacher and social worker and contact the family if necessary to determine
whether the parent/guardian has received notification and made a good faith
effort to comply with the law. If the principal determines that the
parent/guardian has not made an effort to comply with the law, the principal
will inform the school social worker to make a referral to the New Hanover
Judicial Attendance Council (JAC).

What is the procedure for handling tardies?
CODINGTONS PROCEDURES FOR TARDINESS
Please be aware that the morning drop off period (7:20 a.m.-7:45 a.m.) is
very busy; especially after
7:35 a.m. Therefore, expect delays and give yourself plenty of time to arrive
at school. If you arrive
after the warning bell (7:45 a.m.), there may not be sufficient time for your
child to get to class before
the tardy bell rings.
After the warning bell rings at 7:45 a.m., the morning supervisors will put
out a sign that requires
parents to park and escort their children into the office to sign them in. If
a parent drops off their
child and leaves without signing them in, the child may not be admitted to
class. The parent(s) may be
contacted to return to school to sign their child into class. Children
arriving late is an unexcused tardy
and will be noted as such. Excused tardies are given to children who have
doctor or dental
appointments.
For those children who are chronically late, a referral will be made to the
school social worker who will
contact the parents. If the tardiness does not improve, a meeting will be set
up with the social worker
and/or an administrator to resolve the problem.
From time-to time, there may be an accident or the patrolman does not come
to direct traffic, and there
will be delays beyond the normal traffic congestion. During those rare
occurrences, we will allow
children to come to school, and not be considered tardy. Our supervisors will
tell parents, and we will
make an announcement to inform classroom teachers.
