2nd Grade Newsletters

The kids had a very exciting week this week as they became parents of baby chicks when they came in Monday morning! The chicks hatched during the night on Sunday and Monday morning. There was one late hatcher that the kids got to see starting to hatch. The chicks were covered with soft, yellow down. They were very cute and cuddle. Each day, students went outside and played with the chicks. They were able to hold them. Some of the chicks would fall asleep in their hands. By Thursday, our chicks had begun molting. That means that they had lost their down and began to grow feathers. This was new as this is the first year that we have been able to see this. The students have really enjoyed this learning experience! This week we began to learn about money in math. We have been working on counting money, the names of the coins, and how much each coin is worth. Students have been using paper coins to make different amounts different ways. They are really doing a good job with this. Please continue to work with them on this concept at home and if you have any concerns, please let me know! Our egg hut today was a lot of fun. Students were on their best behavior and even helped each other out! This was a great show of citizenship. I am proud of their cooperation! Next week is spring break so there is no school. Please keep your child reading so that they can pick right back up where they left off when we return on the following Monday. We will also be continuing our money unit in math. We will also be learning about the Tropical Rainforest and its tundra and animals when we return. ENJOY YOUR SPRING BREAK!! Current and Upcoming Happenings in 2nd Grade March 23-April 6 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Second Grade continues to study Embryology as we care for our chick eggs. Students are involved in caring for the eggs by rotating them 2-3 times a day. We are “candling” them with a device provided by Davie County’s local 4-H. This is an intriguing way for students to see the inside of the egg and incorporate information they’ve learned throughout our study. We’re SO excited! We are looking for our baby chicks to arrive, April 2nd!!! What a super job students did during swimming lessons! They thoroughly enjoyed them and learned so much! Thanks for those who were able to attend the last day of lessons to see how well your child performed. We know it meant so much to them! The study of “Weather” continues to be a part of our unit study. As the Easter season approaches, students will be engaged in a variety of activities. We are persistently insisting our 2nd graders to learn their basic math facts. This includes addition and subtraction. We’re finding that many of them haven’t mastered their facts and regrouping is a major challenge for them. As you see the facts sheets in your child’s folder, you will see the areas of concern. PLEASE work with your child, even if it involves making flash cards. Thank you for supporting your child, as we only want to see them succeed. If there’s anything more we can do, please let us know. We only have a few weeks left until Report Cards go home. Please check your child’s AR points and percentage as many have already met their goal. Awesome job! However, there are several students that haven’t met their goal. We are lacking MANY permission slips AND money for the NC Zoo Trip. We need this no later than March 28th. Don’t forget that Mother’s Tea will be Friday, May 11th. We will send more information at a later date. Please make arrangements to attend; this is a very special occasion mothers will NOT want to miss out!
