The Daily Five

The Daily Five
It won’t be long before you will be hearing your child talk about “The Daily
Five.” The Daily Five is a way of structuring our literacy block so every
child is independently engaged in meaningful literacy tasks. These tasks
will have the biggest impact on your child’s reading and writing
achievement. There will be whole group instruction and then all students
will be given independent practice time to read and write while I provide
focused instruction to small groups or individual students. The Daily Five
is comprised of:
*Read to Self
*Work on Writing
*Read to Someone
*Word Work
*Listen to Reading

There are specific behavior expectations that go along with The Daily Five.
We will spend our first weeks working on building stamina in reading and
writing and fostering a classroom community. I will also be spending time
learning about your child’s strengths and his or her greatest needs as a
reader and writer so that I can plan for your child’s instruction. In
kindergarten, you will rarely find worksheets coming home as these do not
result in a high level of learning (consider worksheets as “busy work.”) Your
child will be taught how to select “Good Fit Books” (which will motivate his
or her love of reading) and will be accompanied by extended practice and
reading instruction.

I look forward to a great year with your child!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Johnston

***The Daily Five will be used school wide this year. Therefore, if you have
children in upper grades, you will be hearing more about The Daily Five as
well.
