Dear Parents,
Welcome to First Grade! I am so happy that your child will be in my class. I know that, together, we
will help your child have a great time this year.
My husband and I moved to North Carolina in 2006 from New Orleans, Louisiana and are
considered “Hurricane Katrina Survivors!” We were very lucky as we did not sustain major damage or
flooding to our home. After the storm, we felt the need to move from the area.
After Katrina, due to a job change, my son’s family moved to the Raleigh area. We had visited them
many times and fell in love with this area. We are very proud to now call it home.
I have three grown children and two adorable grandchildren, Ben Russell is 7 years old and three year
old, but thinks she's 15, Isabella, that I talk about constantly. I’m sure you will see
their pictures on my desk.
My teaching career spans 27 years with twenty-one of those years at the first grade level. First
graders are a wonderful age. It is very satisfying to see how much educational growth is made by the
end of the school year. I have also taught 4th - 8th grade.
At Airline Park Elementary, I was chosen Teacher of the Year in 1999. I was also was nominated by a
student and was a finalist in the WRAL Mix 101.5 Teacher of the Year contest in 2008. Both were
very exciting highlights of my teaching career.
Your child is important to me. I want him/her to learn as much as he/she can and have a happy year.
